5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read December 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
My Star, by Christine Gasbjerg is a fairly short book about a young girl, Millie, tired of the ache in her heart. While most of us opt for the Ben&Jerry's, Millie opts for a mission out into space. The book itself, although technically sci-fi, had a sort of post-apocalyptic theme with a small hint of dystopian fantasy to it.

The prose startled me at first. It's written in a present tense, which I wasn't used to, but after a little while it grew on me. It's still not my favorite prose, and not something I would have chosen, but Gasbjerg makes it work well for the story.

The characters themselves are well written and distinct, which was a plus for the genre where I've read a lot of characters who tend to be two dimensional and interchangeable. You get to know Millie in a relatively quick fashion, and it was nice to read a character who was unique, but not to the point of being "obnoxiously perfect".

I'm giving the book a happy five of five stars, and if you like that sort of sci-fi romance style of book, I highly recommend picking this up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book - can't wait for more. December 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I felt like it was me in space.

I completely relate to the lead character, Millie. She's got guts, brains, and heart. She's not afraid of anything, and she's ready to try it all. At the same time she's also becoming aware of when to sit back, be neutral, diplomatic, and even political in order to get the most preferable outcome of a situation. She's foxy, cheeky, curious, brave, and aware. She's also vulnerable and pensive at times, like we all are.

I generally watch all sci-fi movies I come across, and for some reason I keep relating My Star to a mixture of Alien, Prometheus, and Star Wars - primarily the old episodes. I find that Millie's path is a somewhat lonely one, like Luke Skywalker's and Ellen Ripley's - facing the darkness all by themselves. On the other hand, Millie's parallel quest for love is somewhat similar to Elizabeth Shaw's in Prometheus, which makes it a complimentary and satisfying polarity between vulnerability and toughness in the character.

The book has my warmest recommendations. It's a must-read, and I hope it one day will become a classic and turned into a movie - by, let's say, Ridley Scott.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top 10 of sci-fi authors December 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've read many sci-fi books over the years. It's been a while since I added a new sci-fi book to my top 10, but My Star is certainly going on the top ten list. It`s got everything I value most in a good sci-fi - it has space, adventure, science, not yet invented technology, human relations, love, deep concepts, mind expanding ideas, and a helluva cool story line. And then it`s well written and well edited. It`s really a great piece of skilled writing.
I`m happily surprised that an unknown author can come out of nowhere with such great work. And on top of it all, the cliffhanger at the end of the book has left me breathless to read the next book.

If I should pull something out in particular, it would be chapter 8. That chapter had me tied to the chair with superglue. But don't skip straight to that chapter. Be patient and let the story build. There's a lot invested and at stake in the story, and you dont want to miss any of it. Overall, the book builds up to a sci-fi story of epic proportions, that I am not going to miss any part of. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Girls! January 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a book that can be enjoyed by men as well, seeing that I am one. The girls will love Kurt but I really enjoyed the character development of Millie. Granted this book is not a long read compared to The Marann (Tales of Tolari Space) another book I enjoyed. I would pick this book over The Marann any day. It's 12 chapters of Sci-fi adventure, romance and who can forget the conspiracy. Can't wait for book 2!!

This is a great read. Young adult females will love this mix of romance and sci-fi.

It is well written, the plot has the right twists, and the characters are real.

The is the first book in The Star Series and what a way to start a new series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Mix of Romance, Adventure AND Sci-Fi June 5, 2014
By Rock Me
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love Sci-Fi and when you mix it with adventure and a nice dollop of romance, you have the perfect mix. The lead character, Millie is feisty, strong, and adventurous. At the same time has some endearing insecurities making for a well-rounded 3-dimensional character.

Millie signs up for a dangerous deep-space mission to escape her broken heart. She is convinced that she is unlovable and that she will never find love again. She doesn't expect -- Kurt. They become friends, but she falls for him not knowing if the love interest is mutual.

Totally ignorant about space and the expedition's mission Millie starts asking questions. One question leads to another, to another.

When she discovers a conspiracy of astronomic proportions, she finds herself in danger. She is exiled to a uninhabited planet, running out of oxygen and expecting to die. Then .... LOL! you will have to read the exciting ending yourself. AND you will definitely want to continue onto Book Two of what will hopefully be a three book series.

A very satisfying story, great characters ... in all, a fabulous week-end read!
