3.0 out of 5 stars Album sounds very R. Kelly-ish
This was a good first effort for his debut. But most of the time Avant sounds too much like his Chicago competitor R. Kelly, since this album was recorded in the same city. The same bump and grind themes so common in R's songs are felt within this album. Steve Huff's production wasn't as well known in 2000 before his 2001 assault on three different albums. But it showed...

When Avant graced the airwaves with his sensational debut single Separated quickly everyone draw comparisons to R. Kelly and rightly so but, after purchasing his debut cd and listening to it throughly.. This brotha has a style all his own .. Vocally yes there is some very strong comparisons to R.Kelly and yes he even kinda looks like R.Kelly but that is where the comparison stops.. You can tell that R.Kelly was a major influence on him .. Over the 12 track disc songs range from uptempo party grooves, midtempo grooves, sensual ballads .. Production is handled by newcomer Steve Huff after this effort will be a household name.. Steve Huff has begun to make a little noise on the music scene already with a track he wrote and produced on Joe's great cd My Name Is Joe the track he wrote and produce is Treat Her Like A Lady .. Avant is one of the brightest talents in R &B and this cd will prove it that he is going to be around for a while .. Among the highlites which are many on a very good album are as following

Separated

Let's Make A Deal

My First Love .. a great remake of the Rene & Angela tune .. This is true to the original song same arrangements check out fellow newcomer Ketara Wyatt she rips it

Destiny

OOH AHH

This Time

Pick this up you wont be disappointed

4.0 out of 5 stars A very impressive debut, May 22, 2000

I would actually give this a CD a 4.5 if there was a selection for that. This is an impressive debut by Avant. I saw the video "Separated" on BET, but I thought to myself, Oh No! not another R Kelly wannabe. A reviewer, "Tony" recommended for me to buy this CD, so I decided to take his advice. "My Thoughts" is one of the best r&b CDs out now. The production is handled by Steve Huff, who produced a classic song on Joe's "My Name Is Joe" CD called, "Treat Her Like A Lady. I also found this out from "Tony". All 12 tracks are tight. You'll find a balance of slow songs, midtempo songs and uptempo songs. I'll have to admit Avant has surprised me with this CD. My favorite songs are "Let's Make A Deal", The 1st single, "Separated", "Get Away", "I Wanna Know" and "My First Love". I recommend this CD to anyone that likes current R&B CDs from Joe, Carl Thomas, or Donell Jones. This CD is worth the $13.

4.0 out of 5 stars the brother could sing!, July 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: My Thoughts (Audio CD)
damn, is it just me or his avant off the chain? i love thisguy. i was first drawn into his music, when i heard"separated" and i couldn't get it out of my head. the brother could sing. the album is awesome, and much props to his founder. the first single "separated" has been tearing up the charts since day one. the song is a mid-paced track, with hot lyrics, and of course my man avant's powerful voice leading the way. i loved it since the first time i heard it. the remix though with kelly rowland & beyonce' knowles of destiny's child, i ain't really feeling though. the tracks that follow up aren't just corny songs, they are just as phat, if not phatter then the lead track. i love "get away", "happy", "my first love", "destiny", "ohhh ahh" & the powerful & moving ballad "why". he is the definet new voice in ghetto rnb soul. nobody out there now can match him. the reason i gave this cd four stars is because of 2 reasons. 1~) the album is way to short. when you get a talent like this you can't make the cd only 12 songs long, maybe 14, but not twelve. 2~) i don't like 2 songs. "lets make a deal" & "reaction". i don't hate them or anything i just can't get into them like i get into every other track. the moral of the story is this, pick up this album! its hot to death, and i can guarentee, that there will not be a hotter male rnb album out this year. pick it up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Way to start off a career, August 20, 2000

Avant surprised me, as im sure he did with everyone else, with this release. Even without a follow-up single to "Seperated", I took a chance a bought this cd with the advice of fellow reviewers "Tony" and "James H2000". Again they pointed me in the right direction by recommending "My Thoughts" to me. At first when I heard songs like "Reaction" and "Happy" I thought I had wasted my money but after taking time to actually sit down and listen, the songs grew on me. He really succeeded with uptempo songs like "Serious" and "Reaction" but again I have to look at his ballad work. In one word Avant's ballads: Exceptional. "Let's Make a Deal" was perfect and "Ooh Aah" was just as good but they shy in comparison to his duet with Ketera Wyatt on "My First Love". This is definitely what R&B should be and showed me that amid those other uptempo beats, he really knew how to make a real love song. The orchestra accompanied ballad is probably going to be tha best song he ever makes. I say that because most people who have been out 10 times as long as he has could not create such a masterpiece. I lie to you not when i say that this song is beautiful enough to bring DMX to tears. So why only give this album only 4-4 1/2 stars? Length. I listened to this album while eating a Pop-Tart and it was done before I could get to the crust. But with the songs he put out on this album I would have accepted waste songs. Avant has a long lustrious career ahead of him, barring any accidents with production or sell-out songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT, November 2, 2005
This review is from: My Thoughts (Audio CD)
I actually bought this cd the week it came out a couple of years ago. But for some reason I felt the need to rate it. Now let me just say that I love love R&B. I love albums that I can put into my cd player and basically walk away from it. This is one of those cds that you can do that with. The lyrics range from diffrent outlooks and everyone can relate to at least 2. I would go on track by track but I cant say enough about it. This cd is a must for every R&B colection......GET THE ALBUM IF YOU DON"T HAVE IT AND IF YOU ALREADY HAVE IT Y NOT PLAY IT. IT'LL MAKE YOU FEEL AS GOOD AS I FEEL WHEN I LISTEN TO IT

5.0 out of 5 stars HOT DEBUT...., March 10, 2001

I purchased this cd after going to my cousin's house and he was listening to it after he purchased it not knowing anything about Avant except for listening to the cd in the music store. I was shocked because you don't expect a new artist to have such a good cd when it's their debut. Avant really explemplifies what R & B is all about. You can listen to this cd all the way through and don't have to skip any songs. The songs that really stand out are Separated, Let's Make A Deal, Get Away, My First Love (great remake), Destiny and Why. The cd has a good range of slow jams and mid to up tempo tracks. Avant has this voice that captures you and keeps you drawn to his music. Magic Johnson did R & B a good deed by signing Avant and he will definitely be around for a while. I'll be waiting for next cd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Im really startin to love rnb!, October 10, 2001

And I was into rock...now I know what the hell I was missin out on!!

I accidently found out about Avant when I was doing a search on Next, if you enjoy them, boy will you enjoy Avant. This guy has an amazing voice, funky tunes, soulful slowjams and there's some meanful heartful stuff in there too.

The melodies are sweet, damn sweet. They're catchy, but not commercial catchy, the words are actually meaningful, and some..ooo damn! pretty damn sexy...honestly...if you're listening to it with the right person..well..well then I spose you wouldn't really be listening..but moving with it. It's soulful, it speaks from within. opposite those there are also the tracks that really promote...guy power?! I like the way in which he tells playin dirty chicks where to go...smart and intelligent, yet they so get a hammering at the same time.

Those soulful tracks are "My First Love" (gorgeous harmonies on here with a guest gurl on the scene), "I wanna know" (I think everyone feels this way about someone at times), "Ooh Aah" (nice nice guitar here, layered nice too..one of those 'why are you still wearing clothes?' songs..), "Get away" (kinda sad, but still really nice, something you don't wanna do).

"Destiny", "Happy", both cool funky, fresh upbeat kinda songs. But, to beat those 2 though, "Reaction"...the best song off the whole album! This song cuts rugs...you just wanna be on the dance floor with your guy/gal and gettin down, just too damn good =) oo..this song does stuff to me.

I wanna get that gurl and put her in her place in "let's make a deal"..can't stand chicks like that! Though, it's a really good song that gets your emotions up, and has a very bumpin', funkin', beat with catchy vocals.

One song I don't like though, is "Why". It seems to me to be a really typical 'everyone lets get together and make this world a better place' kinda song. You know, the types that say 'look at those on the streets with tears in there eyes, and those in their mansions with money falling from their pockets'. Honestly, there's nothing wrong with it, and those issues he addresses in the song are real. but every single rnb album I ever listen to seems to have 1 track on it like that, and it just looses it's appeal after a while..too repetitive I spose. But, this song really shows his vocal abilities, and they're really damn good!!

Other than those words above though, this album is excellent! Im so impressed, and the varied styles of songs does keep it interesting, and without a doubt gets ya moving. A must for all rnb lovers!
