In My Time of Dying,
This review is from: In My Time of Dying (Audio CD)
IN MY TIME OF DYING is my first Pride and Fall cd. I bought it after hearing some samples of their songs on the internet. After hearing a good enough samples, I eventually bought IN MY TIME OF DYING. The music has lots to offer for fans of synthpop and EBM. All of the songs are loaded with crisp, melodic synth melodies, uptempo dance beats, and thought provoking lyrics. I knew I was in for a real treat when I first heard "The Painful Regret". I like how the dance beats gradually builds up and eventually transforms the song into a catchy EBM track worth dancing along to on the dance floor. The haunting lyrics are reminiscent of VNV Nation. Pride and Fall manages to capture that same sorrow and melancholy that often permeates VNV Nation's music. This is my personal favorite uptempo track on IN MY TIME OF DYING. Another great song is "I Wither" with its crisp synthesized melodies. The song's backbone is a solid, heavy percussion beat. "I Wither" isn't a dance song but I wouldn't necessarily call it a ballad either. "The Black Gate" is a killer dance track. You know right from the get go that this song was intended to get you on to the dance floor or at least in your living room. What got me to buy the album to begin with is the beautiful ballad "In My Time of Dying". After hearing that song on the band's Myspace page, I knew this was a cd worth buying. The simple lyrics are beautiful and they go exceedingly well with the lush melodies. That song along makes this cd worth buying. My only quibble with Pride and Fall is the vocals, they tend to be monotonous. In some songs the monotony really stands out like in "I Wither" but for the most part, I tend to forget that and pay more attention to the lyrics and melodies. After hearing IN MY TIME OF DYING, I am definitely going to be looking into the band's other cd.

Pride and Fall has been raising their own personal bar for a while now, finally completing the their third full-length album and doing so with a nice touch of EBM class. They've been one of those little bands with a little label that did a great job of being noticed, too, but their label (Dependent) is drying up and Pride and Fall might be going their way as well. That's the shame considering this newest piece of work is possibly one of their best and because I've grown to really like Pride and Fall.
Since their first release, Pride and Fall has been developing a sound and turning it into something they could call their own. In the beginning they were called a VNV Nation clone, unfairly so, but lately they've been heralded as their own little dominion. They still have the same type of beats they started out with, the same vocals that managed to get them noticed and that made them a great band, and the same standard of great tracks that make their albums worth picking up. It just seems like In My Time of Dying had finally managed to get everything in order, arranging all those elements into something really impressive. Listening to Monsen, Waagen, and Johnsen had certainly been a good thing. If you like the dancefloor EBM with something more that melodic undertones, you might want to give Pride and Fall a listen. They have continually kept the quality of their albums at a great level, have managed to keep themselves as a faceless type of band where their music does the talking, and create music that grows on you as you listen to the album a few times through. If you want to judge that for yourself, you can go to Metropolis and listen to samples provided or go to the bands website. Certainly worth the time.
