Book Description

May 1, 2000
This is a memoir of the experiences of a young boy in Parochial School during the late 1920s and early 1930s. The impacts of the Depression and Prohibition joined to create a dysfunctional home life. With bills pressing and no income, mother went off to New York City to become a clerk in Stern's Dept. Store on 34th Street. The Sisters of St. Joseph in a four-room school in the boy's small village in Western New York became a guiding lifeline. Loving neighbors helped fill a frequently empty stomach.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This book find author Dailey going back even earlier in his life than in his World War II story, "Joining The War At Sea 1939-1945." That book chronicled the lives and events of many of the ships and men who fought World War II. This new story is a memoir, just 134 pages long. It gives a picture of a period in U.S. life during which its citizens wanted to believe that the world was at "peace."

From the Author

The world powers made arms limitation treaties while figuring out how to rearm. For the majority of citizens living between our seacoasts, little of this world unease came to the surface and where it did, it was ignored as a matter of preference. The only everyday national activity that surfaced in people's lives were the stock markets. I wanted to tell a local story. While its details may differ from community to community, I believe that readers will find a resonance with growing up in "anytown USA."

5.0 out of 5 stars A true story with some real pathos., November 20, 2008
This review is from: My Times With the Sisters and Other Events (Paperback)
My Times with the Sisters is a true story written well and with some pathos. How many boys go to the front door, open it, see a woman there, run back inside to tell his sisters, that a lady is at the door, only to find out it is his own mother, who has been long gone? A worthwhile read.

5.0 out of 5 stars "My Times with the Sisters" is a literary delight., September 7, 2001

This review is from: My Times With the Sisters and Other Events (Paperback)
Reading, "My Times with the Sisters and Other Events" by Franklyn E. Dailey, Jr., was a delight from start to finish. I cried and laughed as I traveled with the author as he described his childhood in upper New York state during the Prohibition and Depression eras. I rejoiced in his childhood struggles and growth as I cherish watching my 5 year old son grow. My heart filled with the patriotism that I share with the author. My love for my father who is the author's peer, brimmed with every line as I came appreciate the men of that generation even more. I am buying several copies to give to friends, family and my local library.

5.0 out of 5 stars An afternoon with My Times With The Sisters And Other Events, December 18, 2000
By
Ron Wright (Palm Desert, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Times With the Sisters and Other Events (Paperback)
This is a real pleasure for me: I sat down one afternoon with My Times With The Sisters And Other Events. It turned out to be one of the most pleasurable times I've had in years! I read it in one sitting, and every single page brought me memories, or gave me a chuckle. I was brought up a city boy, but far enough from "downtown" to have been able to roam the hills and dales, looking for trapdoor spiders and the like. Just now I sat back and, looking at the book, thought of some of the observations - gave me a warm glow!
