5.0 out of 5 stars Doug Stone is the man!, April 16, 2008
This review is from: My Turn (Audio CD)
I have loved his music for years and was aware he had been out for awhile with some health issues. With this album, he is not signed with any of the large recording companies. He is doing all this himself so it will be hard for him to get as much exposure as with one of the mega music companies.

I am telling all of you this so that you can help promote this album "My Turn" and encourage your radio stations to play it.

My husband and I were fortunate enough to attend a concert last weekend and visit with him some. He is a very nice man and is very personable and humble with his fans. He shared with us the info about promoting this album on his own and hoping for it to do well.

You will not be dissapointed with his new work either! Of course, I am still partial to some of his older music but that is because we listened to it while we were still in a courting stage. Now my husband and I have been married for 16 years!

I am looking at replacing all my old audio tapes since I have worn them all out! I sure hope I will be able to find them here on Amazon.

Doug also has a myspace site to keep fans up to date. Like I said, he really is a great guy. Thanks for reading.....and no, I am in no way related to him, just a major fan!

3.0 out of 5 stars Stone Makes A Detour with "My Turn", October 22, 2007

This review is from: My Turn (Audio CD)
Prime Cuts: Nice Problem, She Always Gets What She Wants, You Were Never Mine to Lose

When Stone croons, "We're so smooth, we're dancin' on glass," he means exactly what he sings. Stone who once had a corner on the country-ballads market with hits like "Too Busy in Love," "In a Different Light," and "Little Houses" returns in fine fettle with his much anticipated release "My Turn." Save for four tracks, this CD finds Stone indulging in his balladry best with modern love songs as well as the George Jones-like melancholy barroom weeper "The Right Side of Lonesome" with some heart-tugging fiddle work from Rob Hajacos. However, the major departure is that this is effort is more self-contained with Stone sitting on the producer chair. As a producer, Stone has deftly kept the backings understated with the focus on his own honey-sweet vocals that show no sign of aging. It is still as romantically beguiling as it was in 1990 when Stone burst onto the scene with his career defining "I'd Be Better off in a Pine Box."

Lead single "Nice Problem" is a winsome example of what country music does best: taking a lofty theme such as homelessness and dressing it up in a narrative that Middle America can not only relate to but also pricks the conscience in a non-offensive way. Such ingenuity can only come from two veterans of the pen Tim Johnson and Kim Williams. The other noteworthy ballad, though less revolutionary is the Stone co-write "You Were Never Mine to Lose," a heart broken lament, something Stone does so well in drawing us in to share his heartbreak in such a effortless way. While the ultra-smooth "Dancin' on Glass" is rendered with all the amorous importuning the lyrics demands as Stone dazzles in the delights of how well he gets along with his lady. However, not all the ballads work, writer Rusty Vansickle who gets five whopping cuts, shows a penchant for clichés most evident in "Ain't that Just Like a Woman" rifled with over-used lines like "when I'm weak she makes me strong" and "through toughest time she stands right by my side." It gets to a point that such songs just get a tad irritating--are these love songs really sincere or are they just to there milk the money out of Stone's ballad-loving fans?

Randy Vansickle gets a redeeming moment with "She Always Gets What She Wants," a melodic up-tempo boasting a rock-solid insistent rhythm that ought to be a good follow-up single. While album opener "We're All About That" (also a Vansickle original) tries to sink into some delta swamp only to be let down by Stone's tired delivery that somehow makes the song sound flat. Most unconvincing is "Don't Tell Mama," a track interestingly co-written by Jerry Lasiter who was Tanya Tucker's troubled ex. "Don't Tell Mama," is supposed to be an engaging and sober narrative about a car crash by a drunk driver with Stone coming to the rescue only to find the driver whispering his last words, "Don't Tell Mama I was drinking." Supposedly a tearjerker nonpareil; however, coupled by the extremely languid pace and Stone's weary vocals, the urgency and poignancy of this track just stale.

Perhaps without the pressures of a major label or Stone's lack of experience on the helm, "My Turn" somehow lacks the verve to lift this CD from good to excellent. Sure, there are enough ballads here (especially "Nice Problem") that do move the heart and conjures up nostalgia and romance. However, if Stone wants to return to the competitive land of radio airplay, "My Turn" may sadly be just a detour.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST yet!!!!, July 25, 2008
This review is from: My Turn (Audio CD)
Oh Yeah, He's still got "IT"!!!

Great song selection, the best vocals EVER, honest and pure talent!

Foot stompers, heart wrenchers, love, regret, memories, mama, trucks, drinking, hell raising, YEP, it's all there, in that smooth Doug Stone style.

Doug has proved that you don't need a major record label to produce your BEST work, you just need to lay your heart on the line, find the best musicians possible, and sing it like you've never sung before!!!!!
