Coming of age is always confusing..., December 10, 2005
This review is from: My Wartime Summers (Paperback)
Reading this book for a college class focused on children's literature provided a lens for me that differed from the usual manner I look at books. Ellen is a character than many children will identify with as she struggles with her sensationalized view of the war. I don't like how the book enforces gender/heterosexuality. It is rather disappointing when she begins to "fit in" as her married out of high school mother always wishes her to do. There is also no explanation for the sudden friendship between Lisa and Ellen--which you would think would be complicated since their first meeting included Ellen attacking Lisa for being a "German spy." Overall Cutler does a good job of showing how the war can feel really far away until families are directly affected.

Ellen is such a good character. I loved this book so much. I've read it two times already. I liked it a lot because I love reading about the olden days.

A childs view of adult issues with a childs humor, November 11, 1998

This review is from: My Wartime Summers (Paperback)
I was assigned this book in a college class. I laughed at many of the things that this girl does and thinks about adult issues. Also a serious look at the changes a 12 year old goes through during WWII. A good book
