Book Description

With its honest, journal-like style, My Way Home (the first book in the St. Gabriel series) has endeared and captivated readers. For over twenty years, Cammy Coleman dreamt of visiting the beautiful island of St. Gabriel. Filled with history and tradition, it’s surrounded by the brilliant northern waters of Lake Brigade. Charming old buildings line its main street, and grand homes, cottages, gardens and woods complete the picture-perfect landscape. Life has never allowed Cammy to make the trip to St. Gabe, but she’s been content to be a homemaker, mother, and wife to her husband of twenty-five years, tucking away her dreams for someday.

But when the husband Cammy adores asks for a divorce, she’s devastated; the last thing she wants to do is leave the safety and solitude of her home. Her well-meaning friends, however, have something else in mind. Hoping to distract her from her grief, they convince Cammy to go with them on a week-long retreat to St. Gabriel. Cammy grudgingly agrees, but finds herself immediately drawn to the island and an abandoned lodge in a way that opens up the possibilities of a new life, new loves and finding her way home.

Warm and inviting, My Way Home is a touching, entertaining and emotionally powerful story that speaks to the inner strength within us all.

Cammy Coleman's life is turned upside down and inside out when her husband, Race, leaves her for a younger woman. After twenty-five years of marriage, it was a shock that sent Cammy into deep depression and isolation. When her friends decide to take Cammy on a trip to St. Gabriel, a place Cammy has always dreamed about going to, she doesn't want to go. But there is nothing keeping her in her hometown of Texas, so she packs her things and goes.

The island is everything Cammy had ever dreamed of. It's beauty and tranquility bring some peace in Cammy's life and she doesn't want to let it go. When Cammy and her friends are out riding their bikes across the island, sightseeing, Cammy spies an old deserted building between the trees. Urging her friends to go along with her, Cammy makes time to inspect the property. She instantly falls in love with it, but knows it will take much to get it renovated.

Cammy has to decide if she wants to sell her house, the home she built with Race, in Texas in order to have the funds to buy the lodge. It will be a new start for Cammy, but will end one of the last remaining ties she has with her husband.

MY WAY HOME is an absolute must read! I was entranced from page one. The plot twists and turns and leads you to a magnificent climax. Cammy, Race, and other characters of the island are wonderful and unique and I fell in love with many of them. This is a heart-warming story of love, loss, and home. The old adage , "Home is where the heart is", certainly rings true for this stunning novel. I look forward to reading more from Cynthia Lee Cartier.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm torn March 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved the beginning of this book. I couldn't put it down. About halfway though, I found myself waiting for something else to happen. The end was interesting and enjoyable but I find myself feeling like this novel was too long. There were about 5 chapters in the middle that could have been eliminated without taking anything away from the plot. Overall, a good book. I just think some editing was needed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Started Off Strong Ending a bit Weak June 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This novel begins with an ending.

Cammy Coleman who has been happily married for over twenty years to her husband Race is heartbroken when he informs her one day that he wants a divorce and thinks that he is in love with someone else. Cammy is left alone and broken not able to understand how her husband could just decide one day that he wants to be with someone else. After being whisked away to spend her birthday on the island of St. Gabriel that she has always wanted to visited she starts to find some happiness again. I loved Cammy's interactions with her children and with her friends and realizes though divorce is not something she planned on she is starting to change how she sees herself and her life. Once at St. Gabriel's she wanders one evening and finds a lodge with several cottages that she impulsively decides that she wants to buy and run as a lodge like the former owner before her did.

I initially thought this would be a novel about a divorced woman trying to go on and find herself and possibly get a new love interest. Cynthia Lee Cartier's novel surprised me (in a good way) that she did not go down that familiar road. Instead this novel ended up being about marriage, love, and how to forgive and go on. I thought it was wonderfully written and I loved the character of Cammy.

However, though it pains me to say, I did have some problems with certain aspects of the novel. There did seem to be way too many plots going on when I was halfway through the novel. Cartier is almost able to carry them all off until you get to the ending. I can say that I didn't see the plot twist she threw in there coming at all and the way it was written was too far-fetched and made absolutely no sense at all.

Enjoyed this story and the characters in it. Actually looked to see if the island was a real place because I wanted to visit there as well. Excited for the sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Summer Read July 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It took me awhile to get into this book, expecting it to be the same formula as so many others, about a woman abandoned by her husband at middle age. I was delightfully surprised by the adventure presented by this author! It wasn't a work of literature, but that was fine because my intent was to read for entertainment. It didn't disappoint. Light and airy, it really is a great summer book with lots of characters and activity to keep it interesting. I did reach the point where I was obsessed with finishing it, but realized that I would miss it when it was over! So I decided to take my time and savor the experience. I would recommend it.
