Biography

"You're a star. You're an actor. Be a singer" was soul legend Geno Washington's advice to a young, as yet unknown Brown in 1983. More than twenty years later, Brown’s star continues to shine.

Born in Salford, Manchester in 1963, Brown’s early influences were punk: The Sex Pistols, The Clash and Angelic Upstarts. However, it was his friendship with John Squire in his teens that was to become the… Read more in Amazon's Ian Brown Store

Editorial Reviews

Vinyl LP pressing. 2009 album from the former Stone Roses frontman and winner of NME's Godlike Genius award. Already critically heralded as his finest album yet, My Way sees Brown reunited with long time collaborator, writer and producer Dave McCracken. The album was recorded at Battery Studios, the same place where Brown and the Stone Roses recorded their seminal debut album 20 years earlier. 'Stellify' is the first single to be taken from the album and has already received more radio and video airplay than any previous single. Universal. --This text refers to the Vinyl edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars My review of "My Way", December 11, 2009
This review is from: My Way (Audio CD)
As 2009 winds down, ain't nobody talkin'bout Ian Brown's new album. Call me a simpleton, but I've enjoyed watching Brown's solo career grow and succeed in spite of the pathetic ending to the Stone Roses' career. "My Way" is simultaneously a minor step forward as well as an improvement over "The World Is Yours" from maybe two years ago.

Not that I hated Brown's last album, but this one is more tuneful and approachable. There is a heavy-handed presence of sampling and electronic percussion, but fortunately the songs are written around these elements. "Own Brain" sounds like it break-danced its way out of the 80s.

And whatever accolades get lauded toward a Ian Brown solo album, a portion of that praise goes to Dave McCracken who co-wrote and produced a majority of what's here. But the most memorable track, the melancholy "Always Remember Me," was written by Brown alone.

But I gotta dock the album points for covering "In The Year 2525." Honestly, I just don't like that song. Ian Brown's version isn't terrible, I just think it wasn't needed.

Britpop may not rule the headlines anymore, but they still churn out quality stuff. "My Way" is one of Ian Brown's top solo albums.
