I enjoyed this book - really because of the " insights". A bit lighter than I imagined - but still I enjoyed it.

I love Marilyn but this book just dragged on. I was happy to finish it. I do not like not finishing a book and this one came very close

This set contains two separate books -- the first concerns the one-week Platonic romance between 23-year-old Third Assistant Director Clark and Marilyn Monroe during the shooting of a film in England. The second part consists of Clark's diary detailing production of the film ("The Prince and the Showgirl"), which was directed by Monroe's co-star Olivier.

Because the fling with Monroe was not included in the diary (why would one leave out something so juicy?) and given some quibbles as to dates & etc, some challenge the authenticity of Clark's story about Marilyn. Clark includes a contemporaneous letter of the time detailing the affair. He also explains that he was trying to protect Marilyn.

No one can really know the truth, but Clark's story is an absorbing one. And he treated Monroe in a kind and supportive manner -- we'd all like to think we'd do the same. The story is poignant for revealing Monroe's loneliness and self-doubt, as well as her other-worldly sex appeal and talent. I found the story heartwarming and recommend it. I've not seen the movie, but I'd like to.

As for Clark's diary, I couldn't finish it. There's just too much of the upper-crust Brit slumming it a bit and making wisecracks about bagging various young ladies. Didn't we fight a revolutionary war to rid ourselves of the influence of this kind of aristocrat? Well, forgive my Yankee narrow-mindedness. But I like the guy in Clark's story about Marilyin a lot more than the guy in the diary.

I bought this after seeing the film. It's not as innocent as the movie but an engrossing read and well written. I couldn't help but wonder if he'd made up the second part (about his friendship with Marilyn) but whether he did or didn't it doesn't really matter. Interesting behind-the-scenes look behind old Hollywood/British acting royalty.
