The KD 8000 is a beautiful thing.,

I have yet to see a scale in the same price range that has the same level of accuracy, granularity and function.
The scale has every feature needed in food prep (tare/lb/oz/lb.oz/kg/g/baker's math) and nothing more (why do some scales tell you what time it is now?). The 17+ lb. (8 Kg) capacity allows for a large/heavy mixing bowl to first be tared when weighing and combining a large volume a multiple ingredients. The large weighing surface and backlit LED keeps the weight visible and function buttons accessible when weighing items larger than a cereal bowl (something that most scales in this price range cannot claim). Aside the from the overall design, weight capacity and granularity, the baker's math (percentage function) may be this scale's most useful feature! The only negative I've experienced is the scale's quick auto shut-off time when running on battery powered. This can easily be resolved by using an AC adapter. Bottom line: I would by this food scale over any other in the <$100 price range (and I wouldn't by a $100+ scale for my home kitchen).

After a long research for a good quality and accurate scale and moderately priced I settled on this one. I have been using it for about 6 weeks . I am a cold process soap maker and need something that is accurate and can withstand abuse. So far this scale has been very accurate I am constantly testing the accuracy with a weight and it is very accurate .
I like the shield that protects the keypad and the size of the of the table, it can hold a very large bowl and the table can be removed for cleaning. The window is bright and the numbers can be easily seen ..the tare button works perfectly every time. It can easily go from ozs to grams and to % . I have 2 other scales that I thought were very good but this one is now my favorite. That it came with the power cord ,which is usually an option is great ..I hate it when they are battery operated and you have to purchase a power cord separately . I have not used the battery option so I do not know how long the battery lasts. I highly recommend this scale can't wait to use it for bread making .

I almost did not purchase this item based on a previous reviewer's comment. They noted, correctly, that the scale counts down from 99999 through zero before startup. For people who are concerned about this, as I was, the countdown takes 5 seconds, measured by stopwatch. I have found this not to be a problem at all. By the time I grab some flour, or get a bowl, the scale is ready to go.
The tare function on this is a must for me: I love it! The plastic cover over the keypad is a nicer idea than I thought it would be before I used the scale. The one star deduction I gave the scale is due to the slight scuffing of the plastic cover that seems to have occurred in transit. That should not have happened, though it doesn't affect function in the least. The scuffing looks like flour remnants I didn't wipe off. This is something the manufacturer could have avoided by putting a small piece of paper between the keypad and the cover prior to shipment. It was so easily avoidable that I felt a one star deduction was in order. This is a scale that is very easy to use, with all the functions you should expect in a true baker's scale - baker's percentages, gram increments in measurement, conversion between metric and ounce/pounds, and the ability to regulate the automatic shut-down of power. I love that it is battery operated, and don't mind that the scale did not come with the available power cord. I'm extremely pleased with the scale, which has earned a coveted place on my counter.

Been working in the hotel industry for 20+ years and have to say that this scale lives up to it's reputation for getting you the biggest bang for your buck.
The scale is very accurate and I love the plastic hinged window that covers the controls and prevents food etc from getting to it. Another nice feature is the back light as well as the various scaling modes that it can be swiched to quickly. It starts up relatively fast, the only drawback for me is that the scale is a little large and bulky and does not come with an electrical cord justifying a 4 star rating instead. Other than that, I am a totally satisfied customer and would recommend this scale to any budget minded professional.

Wonderful Scale, Poor Instructions,

This is a wonderful scale to have in the kitchen, because it provides Bakers' Percentage. Making bread, you first weigh the flours, and then hit the "%" key to record the total flour weight. After that you can hit the tare key, and weigh the other ingredients as a percentage of the flour weight. You can do this in the same or a different vessel, using the tare key as needed.
The result is that you can easily vary the weight of the flour to make different sized loaves, because the percentage for the other ingredients will remain the same. The instructions at the vendor's website, and included with the machine, have this all wrong. One version says you hit the "%" key twice - it should be once. All versions say you should never hit any other keys after hitting the "%" key to record the wieght of the flour. But it is much easier if you hit the tare key as needed - then you see the percentage for each ingredinet separately, with no need for mental arithmatic. The finish is good, it is easy to clean and keep clean, and I have had no problems in using this scale after figuring out that the instructions were wrong. Making recipes other than bread, you can choose another ingredient for the main one - for instance, in beef stew weigh the meat first, and then base all the perentages on that. A very few cookbooks now provide the Baker's Percent system in their recipes - one I have ordered is Artisan Breads at Home by Kastel. To use books which do not, you have to first convert the volume measurements to weight, bearing in mind the differring densities - a cup of water might weigh 240 grams, while a cup of flour might weigh 90 to 150g depending on the type of flour and how tightly it is packed. But you only have to do this once.

I ordered 2 KD 8000 scales, and received them today. Both work as advertised, no surprises, and many of the issues other reviewer were talking about were not a problem with this set of scales, probably because I knew what to expect.
I will used one scale and the other give away to a friend. I used the scale for a couple of time, and so far, so good. Once I have it for a longer time, or if I find problems with it, I will update this review. The only problem I have is one of the scales came without the package of manuals, return card, and QA card. It looks like it fell out or was never put in to begin with. Pro: Fast accurate low cost high capacity Con: The display is faint if the scale is at eye level, but look fine from above. The secondary set of plastic covers for the display/keys are cheap, flimsy and not serious (but not really necessary). Update: September 2011- Still going strong, great scale, Id buy it again.

this is my third My Weigh scale purchase. I'm a soap maker and use the scale to weigh my lye solution, oils and essential oils for each batch of soap. Spills are inevitable, so I really appreciate the plastic shield that protects the controls. My two previous My Weigh scales in the KD series developed holes in the plastic where you press the tare button because I was always reaching in to tare with gloved hands full of oil or essential oils. The scales still work, but I think it's only a matter of time before they develop problems. So with this new scale I'm also using the soft plastic control cover under the hard plastic shield. One caveat ... be sure the plastic shield is all the way in down position when using the scale. If left up it will bump into the platform and cause weight errors. My scales are in constant heavy use. If you are considering this for a kitchen scale you shouldn't have this problem.
Yes, there is a bit of delay when you first turn it on while it zeros out, but it's mere seconds and certainly not an issue for me. I check my scale periodically and it is always perfectly accurate. The tare feature works as it should and it's great to have the option to weigh in grams or ounces. This is an accurate, workhorse of a scale at a very reasonable price.

I purchased this scale for my veterinary clinic so that I could weigh my small pocket pets and exotic animals. It is very lightweight, easy to use, and easy to clean. So far it seems to be working well for us. We like the bright display and large numbers. I would recommend this scale for your traditional or non-traditional purposes like ours!

UPDATED REVIEW 1 year later: I have to update this review, oh my goodness my apologies for my first impression and critical words! Yikes! I originally was very disappointed because it wasn't OCD perfect in appearance and didn't come with an AC Adaptor but my oh my I have had this scale for a long time now, it survived an overseas move and still works well, and looks great, and is still, after all this time and heavy use, on it's first set of batteries! I love my scale! It does a great job, has remained accurate and easy to use. I shouldn't have judged it so harshly. This is a very good scale and I highly recommend it. Four stars because it doesn't come with it's power cord, but other than that, consider this review humbly edited :)
OLD REVIEW: I bought this scale based on all the hype and great reviews about it containing everything all the other cheap scales leave out, like the ac-adapter. It just arrived, the box states it does not include the adapter. That is extra, as if $50 for a kitchen scale wasn't enough to include it! Sigh. I don't mind paying more for quality, hence this purchase. I DO Mind paying more to have my time wasted! Moving on, it feels delicate, plastic, and the faceplate arrived marred due to poor manufacturer's packaging. It has many small dents, scratches and imperfections that really demonstrate that despite the fancy price tag, this scale was thrown together at the speed of light, with cheap materials and little attention to detail. It's folded up printer paper manual didn't mention how to put it together properly, or have any cleaning instructions. I really thought if I paid a good price I would get some quality for my money, "you get what you pay for" style. There are switches on the back of this scale without sanded edges, or words as to indicate what they do! I am not going to send it back right away, I will give it a chance to do it's job and show me why it is ugly and expensive. If it doesn't do something incredible soon, though, back it goes. I wouldn't recommend it based on it's poor un-finished lazy pitted appearance alone. Sorry, I'm just not feeling the love.

I love this scale. It works great and looks nice BUT the minute you touch it disappointment sets in. Everything feels really cheap. It's all plastic, even the top is plastic with a coating of metal painted on the measuring surface!
I hope it, holds up to use, as it's the only scale on the market with bakers percentage. I've had the scale for a few months... |
