1.0 out of 5 stars Wildly Inappropriate
My child's second grade teacher read this book aloud to her class. My child liked the book and convinced me to buy it for him. While he was reading the book silently in the back seat of the car, my child asked me what the word "brown-noser" means. I was shocked. That evening I read the book myself. 5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Not Inappropriate, it's Great!, September 29, 2009
I beg to differ with the reviewer who said this book is "wildly inappropriate." Funny, charming, irreverant and silly, yes - that's the charm of the entire series. I consider myself a careful parent, and I read everything with my children, who are 6 and 7 years old. We laugh out loud at each "My Weird School" book, "Mr. Hynde" included. These books have turned my kids into avid readers! People have different standards of what is appropriate, and I am completely comfortable with the content of the books. I believe most people in this day and age would agree.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, May 6, 2008
A Kid's Review
I liked this book because I like the music that he teaches. But I do not like Mr. Loring. I think this whole series is very funny. I hope the next series is really good too. It's cool that he was on American Idol. My favorite character is A.J.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weird Time, February 2, 2009
A Kid's Review
This is a book about five kids: A.J., Ryan, Michael, Andrea and their sidekick Emily. A.J. and Andrea hate each other and their boring music teacher leaves and this awesome new music teacher comes. They do a play and Andrea and A.J have to kiss. Mr. Hynde wins! (Oops, I didn't mean to give away the ending.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Wildly Inappropriate, September 15, 2009
My child's second grade teacher read this book aloud to her class. My child liked the book and convinced me to buy it for him. While he was reading the book silently in the back seat of the car, my child asked me what the word "brown-noser" means. I was shocked. That evening I read the book myself. To say that it is inappropriate for second graders or any elementary school kids is an understatement as far as I'm concerned.

Inappropriate/Offensive Language: The book contains three uses of some form of the term "brown-noser." It also has a teacher say to a 2nd grade student, "How's it hangin'?" If you know the origins of those terms, you know that they are wildly inappropriate for elementary school kids. If you do not know the origin of those terms, although they should be self-evident with just a bit of thought, look them up on [...].

Violence: In addition to the offensive language, the book is full of violent imagery. I counted at least five violent references, such as hoping a piano falls on a girl's head, wondering if a teacher was kidnapped, stuffed in a piano and dumped in the river, and a reference to torture.

Disrespect/Intolerance: In addition to the offensive language and violent imagery, there are also off-handed disrespectful attitudes smugly put forth about old people, as well as Indians who may be offended by the use of the term sitting "Indian style."

Add it all up, and this is an obviously inappropriate book for any elementary school aged child, let alone a second grader. I am amazed that the publisher would publish this book and market it to elementary school aged children.
