More About the Author

This is hard. I'm a pretty regular Jersey guy who spent fifteen years trying to write newspaper articles, magazine articles, screenplays, books for adults, and just about everything else before I discovered the one thing I'm good at--writing fiction for kids. I aim for kids who DON'T like to read, and hopefully the kids who DO like to read will enjoy my stuff too. For all the gory details about me, check out my web site.

Yes, I'd have to say "weird" and "off the walls" are accurate descriptions of this really good book! I laughed and then I laughed some more! This book comes complete with a rapper known as Cray-Z, a thief stealing Christmas presents in the night named Keltp from the South Pole and a crazy day at the shopping mall involving Santa, lots of people in lines, and the police! I can see why these books are so popular with the kids!

One thing that has me stumped, however. With the beautiful cover and the terrific artwork inside the book, why does it come in black and white? Surely the artwork is colored so I can't imagine not sharing those adorable pics with the kids in color! I'm sure it makes it cheaper to print, but the chapter titles are in blue, but that's the only color on the pages.

Aside from that, "Deck the Halls, We're Off the Walls" is both fun and funny!

My son loves this book as he does every other book in this series. He is 8 so he's a little old for books this short, but he is a big fan so i will continue to buy every new book until he gets tired of them (and I don't think he will for a while).

My seven year old daughter loves this series of books. There has not been one of the Dan Gutman books she has not enjoyed. I recommend this book!

Having recently read and enjoyed It’s Halloween, I’m Turning Green, my son was ecstatic when Deck the Halls, We’re Off the Walls! came in the mail. Knowing that the back of the book would have weird facts, puzzles, trivia and more, he instantly went to the back of the book so we could do all the fun activities first. These Christmas-themed activities were exciting for him as well as good practice for spelling and reading so I was happy to start with what he sees as the best part of the book. They didn’t take long to go through and we were soon on to the story.

Deck the Halls, We’re off the Walls! once again follows A.J. and his group of friends as they go on an adventure with unexpected twists and turns. This time they are going to the mall to try and speak to Santa and let him know what they want for Christmas. Things go awry when A.J. leaves the long line to try and find a present for his sister and unexpectedly must come to the aid of a young rapper, Cray-Z, being chased through the mall by young girls. Things are further complicated when A.J. is chased through the mall by angry parents after announcing to the waiting children that the Santa they are visiting is not who they expected to meet. This time Cray-Z will have to come to A.J.s rescue and A.J. learns the value of giving to others and what Christmas should really be all about.

This story had many of the same aspects my son enjoyed from the last book by Dan Gutman we read – over exaggeration, mild teasing and jokes that are perfect for young readers – and we were once again laughing along with A.J. and the gang. This book also has a funny Christmas rap as part of the story and my son had the best time learning the words and rapping it for anyone who would listen.

What a terrible book! What happened to non-derogatory comments and respectful interactions with human beings? This book starts off teaching how to manipulate one's parent and then starts to talk about who Santa "really" is (to be cut off supposedly just in time). It tells how to make prank phone calls which all the kids think is a "genius" idea. "Dumbhead" and "Dumb" in describing people's actions and decisions came up frequently. Oh--and it talks about the No Bell Prize. At least it opened up a dialogue with my 7 year old so I could teach him about what the Nobel Prize actually was about. My 4 year old did not get it--but certainly would have started calling his brother "Dumbhead" I am sure--he would get that. It describes that the lead character thinks a woman named "Minnie" invented the minivan, but does not say a thing about the Segway that was used in the mall . . . . Conclusion: not age appropriate and does nothing to enrich a child's mind.
