From the Back Cover

My Weirder School weirder than ever!

Dr. Nicholas is the weirdest history teacher in history! She doesn't care about wars and presidents.

She is going to teach the kids about the history of the toilet bowl! Is she crazy? She built a time machine so she can take the kids into the past . . . and the future. Guess who's going to get stuck in time?

About the Author

Dan Gutman has always been a baseball fanatic. He played in Little League as a kid, and one of the first magazine articles he ever sold explained the science behind the spitball, the scuffball, and corked bats. When he thought about the T206 Honus Wagner—the most valuable baseball card in the world—he began to write honus & me, his first Baseball Card Adventure.

Dan is also the author of the New York Times bestselling Genius Files series, as well as the internationally bestselling My Weird School series.

Jim Paillot lives in Arizona (another weird place) with his weird wife and two weird children. Isn’t that weird?

Funny, challenging chapter books.

They also occasionally provide challenging words that help young readers develop stronger vocabulary, something I especially appreciate as a teacher and parent.

He actually makes time to read this on his own to see what funny thing is going to be said next.

My 6 year olds found this book funny-that's why I gave it an extra star. But the overall message of the book is that school is uncool which is not a message that I want to share with my kids. The main character makes fun of kids who study hard, and that's supposed to be funny. I regret buying this.

Dr. Nicholas Is Ridiculous is the eighth book in the series, My Weirder School. In this book Ella Mentry School has to take a standardized state test, and the school ends up failing. They are given a short amount of time to prepare to re-take the test. So the principal hires a local college professor, Dr. Nicholas, to come and tutor the kids in history. Dr. Nicholas has unorthodox ways of teaching, but for once the kids are interested in what she has to say. In turn, the kids get excited about learning.
If you've not read this series yet, don't worry; you can jump in at any time like I did. I've not had the pleasure of reading the first seven books in this series. I did enjoy this book. It shows the value of good teachers. Dr. Nicholas got the kids interested in learning, probably for the first time in their young lives. She not only talked about history, but she also tried to make it an experience. This book is aimed for kids ages 6-10. I think it fits perfectly into this age group. It has plenty of humor and silliness for the kids. They might also learn something about history, too.

I thought this book was ok and not great. All the kids were all dumb and stupid. It was not a good idea to do that.

Besides the inane "humor" of an author trying to be like a kid (or some kids), there is no substance to the story: certainly no beginning, middle or end. In addition, it puts down older smart kids and older people and those in authority: people who are bald, with gray hair, walk with a cane, and so it goes. I find nothing redeeming about the book: It seems the author is as immature as the characters, since he created them. The only thing bordering on positive was a teacher specialist who was innovative in the subject of history--but she sort of cheated by cramming the kids for an upcoming test by giving them the answers, so even that portrayal of her ended up negative. This is part of a series of similar titles about the shallow "adventures" of A.J.--all, of which, takes pride in being called weird. I will compromise and agree with that.

I bought this book not knowing it was part of a series. My son is 8 and reading is not his favorite thing to do. That is, until I started reading this book to him. The belly roll laughs and watery eyes from laughing so much were a welcome change to his attitude about reading. He actually makes time to read this on his own to see what funny thing is going to be said next. The author definitely knows how to keep the attention of his young readers. I can't wait to buy the rest of these books.

Dr. Nicholas is the oldest and strangest history teacher ever! Will her quirky lessons be enough to bring up Ella Mentary School's atrociously low test scores and save the school from closure?

This series is a MUST read for all elementary grade school students, teachers and parents! I guarantee even your most reluctant readers will squeal and jump up and down when they see a new one has hit the library shelves; I know I do!
