5.0 out of 5 stars For Trisha Yearwood fans everywhere, May 20, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: My World (Audio CD)
Trisha and Cyndi are both from the peach picking state of Georgia, so perhaps it is no surprise that Cyndi regards Trisha as her musical idol and that their music has some similarities. Having said that, Cyndi's album - and her voice - are sufficiently different that she might have been a major star even with Trisha still around.

Whether Cyndi would have become a major star, we will never know because she quit music to lead a normal family life. History is littered with singers that couldn't cope with the pressure so we must respect Cyndi's decision but it is disappointing, especially as so many talented singers aren't given a chance at a second album.

The booklet pictures are reassuring for country fans with several showing Cyndi down on the farm, usually with a picnic basket but there is also one showing her feeding pigs. This might suggest an ultra-traditional album - in fact, the style of the album is contemporary but still rooted in country rather like her idol.

This album gave Cyndi a number one country single (What I really meant to say) but the two that followed it (I always liked that best, I'm gone) were markedly less successful. Nevertheless, the album sold well (over half a million copies) and Cyndi would certainly have been allowed to continue her recording career had she chosen to do so. There is a great selection of songs of varying tempos, many of which Cyndi co-wrote, though there is also an excellent version of I'm gone, a Kim Richey song.

This album demonstrates (if you need evidence) that country music can be both contemporary and of a high quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful music, lovely voice, promising artist., September 6, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: My World (Audio CD)
Artist. Not many pop stars, celeberties, and musicians of our time come close to being an artist. But Cyndi does. An artist has something worthwhile to say and if they are musical artists say it in a beautiful way. Cyndi does both.

This is a wonderful collection of songs and her voice is really a delight to listen to. She changes tempos and uses her voice as a musical instrument to pleasing effect, so rare in today's music. I always liked that best is a very sensual song, for anyone with an iota of true feeling it will be sexier then a 1000 years of Britney gyrations.

This is clearly a young woman of depth and talent. I am not a 'country' music fan, but I can't even thing of a group out there who would not enjoy this CD. Great for everyone, especially people who love clear and wonderful female vocal singing. I look forward, already, to her next release. I just ask for Cyndi to keep displaying the depth inside her and the money will follow and she will remain an artist...and I will keep buying.

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD DEBUT FROM COUNTRY GIRL CYNDI, August 11, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: My World (Audio CD)
Cyndi Thomson's debut "My World" is certainly an album of well-written songs that seem to have a personal ring to them. She delivers them in a breathy, if not average, vocal style, reminiscent of veteran Faith Hill and newcomer Jamie O'Neal. Although the CD is well produced, there is a need for more balance in her repertorie. Several of the tunes almost sound alike in feel and arrangement. With that said, it is still an extremely enjoyable CD to add to your collection. The first single, "What I Really Meant to Say" is poignant, touching and honest; the beautiful "I'll Be Seeing You" is delivered very emotionally; there's a nice originality and buoyancy to "There Goes the Boy", and a gentle sadness to "Hope You're Doing Fine." The title track spells it all out, as Cyndi is obviously proud of her Georgia heritage. Expect great things from Cyndi, as she sings from the heart.
