So overall, the speeds are excellent.
SpinDoctor Reviews
Copying the above-mentioned data, took, on the average, 38 minutes (i.e. at an average speed of ~8.5 MB/sec) only.
Mr Hartmann
This drive is faster than most of the USB 3.0 external drives out there.

Thoroughly tested on latest MacBook Pro i7 equipped with a BLAZING fast internal SSD drive (so performance measurements should not be affected by the host drive)

First thing you will notice is how small it is. About the size of one of those old PCMCIA cards (remember those!) or a business card case. Easily fits in a pocket. It's also an attractive design resembling brushed metal, but it's really plastic. It's not tough plastic, so don't expect this thing to survive being stepped on. Use some care.
Of course, being SSD, it's totally silent - no fans or moving parts.

It comes with a very small USB 3.0 cable and ZERO instructions (actually a good sign! Just plug and play!)

The first thing I did was connect it to my Mac and run Blackmagic's Disk Speed test app. At first it turned in very respectable numbers, higher than advertised. I was seeing ~175MB/s write, ~300MB/s read.

Then something weird happened...

I noticed that after Blackmagic went through several iterations, the impressive WRITE times began to fluctuate wildly, often falling into the <20MB/s range (for comparison, my external USB 2.0 HDD clocks in at a consistent 33MB/s), but the READ speeds remained high.

Every time I ran the test, it would start off blazing for several GBs and then slow down dramatically. I have written to the company to see if they can help characterize this behavior I'm seeing, but they did not write back. This might make this drive a poor choice for SUSTAINED high bandwidth data writing, such as HD video.

So, I'm seeing the READ numbers were ALWAYS GOOD, but the SUSTAINED WRITE numbers were pretty mediocre so I tried to investigate further. I copied a 5GB file (actually the Mac Xcode "package" that has thousands of hidden files).

The MyDigitalSSD PocketVault portable external solid state drive is truly a vault of data that fits in your pocket. In this review, I will highlight three different aspects of the drive: design, speed, and portability.

This drive is EXTREMELY small. I was really surprised from the size, because from the stock pictures, it looks bigger. The picture on the Amazon page of it being placed in a pocket is basically to scale. It’s less than the size of an iPhone 4 smartphone, and is about as thin. Although I would have preferred metal, the plastic of the drive is really high quality and holds up to abuse (I did a few drop tests, with no scratches, dents, or performance effects whatsoever). Although most users won’t be throwing this drive around, it’s good to know that if you’re the clumsy type, this drive will withstand any accidental drops. The cable fits into the drive quite well, as well as into the USB ports on my computer. It definitely takes some force to remove from both the computer and drive itself, which is a good thing so that it doesn’t accidentally fall out during use.

Before I get into the technical aspects of my speed test, let me say that for the average user, you will find this drive very fast. It is much faster than any USB 3.0 portable external hard drive I’ve used, and is on par with other external solid state drives. I conducted speed tests using BlackMagic Design speed test software on a MacBook Pro with USB 3.0 ports. My results were an average of 155.4 MB/s for write and 296.2 MB/s for read. The write speed is basically the same as what MyDigitalSSD advertises it to be, and the read speed, to my surprise, was higher by about 20 MB/s than what they say (270 MB/s is advertised). So overall, the speeds are excellent.

This is my (by now: much updated) first review at Amazon. When buying the 128 GB Pocket Vault, I had relied extensively on the reviews (and comments on reviews) on this page. After this experience, I feel compelled to add the kind of information I wish I had seen before making my purchasing decision...

For the kind of data that I personally wanted to back up on to the Pocket Vault (PV), the average transfer/write speeds were disappointingly low - they were even significantly lower than my current `old-technology' backup setup. Therefore, I returned the PV to Amazon and got a courteous full refund. (My first return of anything to Amazon - I'm impressed with how they handled it.) But read on for what might be useful information to you.

I personally had been looking for a device to quickly (because I want to do it frequently) back up personal files onto. These personal files, at this time, entail ~19.3 GB distributed over almost 52,000 JPEG, Word, Excel, PDF, mp3, wma, etc. files. The average file size is ~375 KB and, naturally, there are many thousands of files that are even smaller than 100 KB. This data is to be copied from a conventional, non-solid state 500 GB hard disk drive (HDD) that is NTSF-formatted and part of my fairly new Windows 7 PC, using one of its USB 3.0 ports.

I had been relying (and now continue to rely) on an old external USB 2.0 (!) Lacie HDD. This HDD consistently copies the above-mentioned data off my PC's HDD in ~22 minutes; i.e. at an average speed of ~14.8 MB/sec. That is my benchmark and this is what I wanted to significantly improve on with a `new technology solution.'

Well, the PV didn't help me in this regard.
