To help you be more efficient in your work, this handy pocket reference gives you instant reminders on how to use important MySQL functions, especially in conjunction with key parts of the LAMP open source infrastructure. This powerful database system is so rich in features that no administrator or programmer can stay familiar with all of them. MySQL Pocket Reference is an ideal on-the-job companion, well organized to help you find and adapt the statements you need -- quickly.

Updated for the latest versions of this popular database, this edition covers many complex features that have been added to MySQL 5.0 and 5.1, including a section dedicated to stored procedures and triggers. After a brief introduction on installation and initial setup, the book explains:

  • How to configure MySQL, such as setting the root password
  • MySQL data types, including numerics, strings, dates, and complex types
  • SQL syntax, commands, data types, operators, and functions
  • Arithmetic, comparison and logical operators
  • Aggregate and general functions
  • Stored procedures and triggers, including procedure definition, procedure calls, procedure management, cursors, and triggers
You don't have time to stop and thumb through an exhaustive reference when you're hard at work. When you reach a sticking point and need to get to a solution quickly, the MySQL Pocket Reference is the book you want to have.

The core of the Simplicis Marketing Dashboard is a content management system, Simplicis CMS.

My professional career began in Hollywood working on TV shows like the People's Court and ESPN Up Close, but my "Internet Career" started in 1991 developing Open Source online gaming software, specifically the Nightmare and Dead Souls mud libraries. I got involved with Java in 1995 and wrote my first book, Database Programming with JDBC and Java in 1996. I spent the Internet bubble writing books and only recently (in 2003) tried my hand and starting my own company with Valtira.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, quick reference, December 7, 2004

This is an excellent reference to the MySQL language. It is faster to use than the online MySQL documentation, and can go anywyere. This is a better reference to MySQL than the O'Reilly book 'SQL in a Nutshell' (first edition), which left out many key MySQL commands and clauses.

The only downside to this book is that it does not include a list of reserved words for MySQL. Other than that, it's a great reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Reference, August 8, 2003
By A Customer
I'm always looking for a good MySQL reference. I find myself looking for the syntax of a particular command. This book comes in handy when looking for a particular MySQL command. For the size of this book, is really packs a ton of information.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for Intermediate-level Users, November 1, 2010
This review is from: MySQL Pocket Reference: SQL Statements, Functions and Utilities and more (Pocket Reference (O'Reilly)) (Paperback)
I got this pocket reference when I was creating my first MySQL intensive website. I learned most of the basic MySQL from another book, but I found that turning to a textbook for the basic reference was too cumbersome. This pocket guide is primarily useful for quick checking of syntax or the structure of the basic MySQL uses. Despite the plethora of the information on the web, I still find it most efficient to look in this pocket reference if I just need some basic information or a confirmation of a particular use. I think that the ideal audience for this reference would be the intermediate-level MySQL programmers - people who are familiar enough with MySQL that they don't need extensive hand-holding with every detail, and yet are not so advanced to find the information in this reference redundant or not detailed enough.

The only major issue that I have with this pocket guide is that today it's a bit dated and in a need of a major revision and an update. However, despite this shortcoming it is still fairly useful for most everyday MySQL uses.
