Maptech's Terrain Navigator (California) offers topographic map coverage for the entire state of California. Each Maptech state region contains up to 4,000 USGS (United States Geological Survey) topographic maps, the recognized standard for off-road navigation for professional and recreational users. Providing you with the highest quality digital maps available, both for computer viewing and printing, you get up to 300 quads per CD, in two scales -- 1:24/25,000 and 1:100,000.
Maptech's Terrain Navigator allows you to scroll seamlessly from map to map, and when four maps converge, the Seamless Mode displays the maps as one continuous image. This allows you to view and print from four maps at once. You can also view individual maps, complete with collar information that is a Maptech exclusive. The collar is the white border along each USGS map, and is full of details like an arrow showing magnetic and true north, the date the maps were created and revised, and much more. Maptech's Terrain Navigator allows you to add trails, notes and symbols to your personalized map, and features a Route Tool that allows you to create your own routes right on the maps. You can adjust waypoint locations, add or remove waypoints, and select individual symbols and colors to represent each waypoint, segment or leg of a route. You can even record comments about routes and individual waypoints, and have the Terrain Navigator save your comments for future reference. If you want to see how many hills you're going to have to climb, simply click on the Elevation Profile Tool and view cross-section terrain profiles. The Line of Sight Tool lets you anticipate the view from Point A to Point B, eliminating the need for guessing what's over the next ridge. Once you're done planning, you can print out the needed maps in a single printout, easily upload and download GPS waypoints, and use your PC to create a route and transfer it to your GPS. When outdoors, mark a waypoint or record your route and later download it onto the map effortlessly. I do search and rescue work. My team, [...], uses maps created with this program for our extensive mission preparedness program. This mapping program has exceeded my expectations for a $100 mapping product. It is a little difficult to learn how to use at first, but once you learn the programming details, it is very functional. Great side by side map/google earth comparisons (when there is an internet connection), very flexible print options.
Pros: Good interface with Garmin Map60CSx, uses actual USGS maps (unlike garmin mapsource), so the labels print out great when printing great quality topo maps, user friendly customization of printed maps, easily add lat/long or UTM coordinates to the sides of your maps. A NOVICE can get great results with a little practice! Cons: Is pretty resource intensive as far as slowing the computer. Awkward commands in the menu bar.
