Releasing a double album after each of her tour has become a tradition (and a nice way to cash in) and while the first two were wonderful evidence of their respective tours, this newer one is a disappointment. 4.0 out of 5 stars Wonferful show but too many songs from her latest release, January 18, 2001
This review is from: Mylenium Tour (Audio CD)
In France, Mylène Farmer represents the link between the 20th century and the spirit of the new millennium, and she implicitly states it, entitling her new release Mylènium: a compound of her own name and of the over-advertised-over-used term millennium. Long time considered as a diva with a huge gay following (in the DVD, you will notice some rainbow flags but also hundreds of same-sex couples...), at 40 years old, she became less provocative and no one care anymore about her real sexual orientation. What's for sure is that she achieved a fine lyrics writing. Her songs are poems very difficult to translate into English, or any other language than French. Mylène Farmer knows how to play with meanings, but not only that.

This Canadian born lady also knows how to entertain her public, reaching levels of high qualified performance that only professionals such as Janet Jackson and Madonna could attend. In Mylène's discography, life albums have great importance: in her 15-year-long career, she only released five studio albums, whereas she published three double CDs life (En Concert, 1989; Live à Bercy, 1997 and The Mylènium Tour, 2000).

"Mylènium Tour" is a good work, presented in an original steel case, but not excellent: sometimes the quality of the recording is poor, although we have the feeling that it is made on purpose. In fact, Mylène has been told to sing in playback (lipsync) most of her songs. After this release, no more doubt that she performs, breathes, sings, speaks, whispers and coughs on life. She is supported by two excellent background voices, though, and her faithful musicians are at their best.

I personally think that "Live à Bercy" (1997) contains material which is more representative of Mylène's work. In fact, 10 songs out of 18 (+ 1 intro) on "Mylènium Tour" come from her most recent and multi-platinum studio release "Innamoramento" (1999), which includes six tracks released as a single. Furthermore, on "Mylènium Tour" are missing tracks such as "Libertine" and "Sans contrefaçon" (only 20 seconds each in the Medley), but also "XXL", the lead single from her best selling release "Anamorphosée" (1995). Finally, there is no previously unreleased material on this album, whereas in her 1989 and 1997 life albums she included new songs ("A quoi je sers..." on the first, and "La poupée qui fait non" in duet with Rai-Superstar Khaled, on the latter).

Let's come to the positive aspects of this album, though: "Mylènium" has a reason on its own to be bought, that is the outstanding version of her 1991 hit song "Désenchantée". It's probably one of her best re-arrangement of a song, along with "California" on "Live à Bercy". "Dernier Sourire" (The last smile: track #8 on Disc 2) also represents an extra on this album: this song has been previously released only on a Various Artists release to arise funds for the HIV/AIDS research. Mylène performs it with her voice several times broken by emotion, while she sings sentences about her loved one resting on her/his bed, waiting for the death to come. "If you want", Mylène sings, "I could come with you". This was a thrilling moment during both the shows I saw, and several people among the public shed some tears.

I think that one needs to see the show to better appreciate this album: if you can, buy the DVD. It is wonderful and code free (but as for NTSC / PAL compatibility, I have no clue - music industry should stop to stuck artists into their countries by means like Zone 1 and 2 and so on... that's a shame). You will notice the real involvement of the public and you will be puzzled by Mylène sexy person crying tears while singing her most moving songs.

I would also suggest you to buy her "Live in Bercy" and her studio album "Innamoramento", which will give you a wide representation of Mylène's work. By contrast, if you are a fan... why are you still reading this? Put it in your basket and proceed to check out!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mylenium Tour on DVD, September 10, 2001

Get the Mylenium concert on DVD! It exceeded all my expectations! Truly a treat for a music fan. Amazing and unforgettable performance by Mylene. Spectacular dancers (most of them are from Broadway), costumes, decorations and the songs are just beyond belief. I am convinced now MF is most talented pop female vocalist of this century. Her lyrics and music mesmerize audiences no matter what language you speak (watch audience singing and crying with her!).
Being also a Madonna fan, I can tell you that her Drowned World show is just a far cry from what French star has to offer (no wonder, many of her fans in Europe were disappointed). Too bad Mylene Farmer is not known here, in the U.S.
Watch it (if you lucky to get DVD), listen to it. You won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Goddess, August 6, 2002
This review is from: Mylenium Tour (Audio CD)
{MF} in this performance is at her best. Lyrical interpretation, emotional emissions, quality of vocal expression is quite awe inspiring. She has progressed from late 1980s with a constantly increased tuning into the human condition with her emoting through her art. With a frustration from inadequate French/English translations of her songs, I have begun learning the French language, and plan to see {MF} in concert in the future. Thank you {MF}. And for those that critize the musical/visual presentation of the Mylenium Tour - look again at the lyrics. It is all in Les Mots, after all. Know of what she sings about. Listen closley to this CD, ponder, and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The hands of God, August 2, 2003

Mylene farmer was molded from the very tip of the fingers of god. If you could watch or listen to the cd or Dvd and not feel anything, I guess you must have been beaten by your abusive parents at a young age and never got help , and therefore lost all sense of emotional feeling. Mylene farmer is soooo much better than anything that we have over here in the states.

Releasing a double album after each of her tour has become a tradition (and a nice way to cash in) and while the first two were wonderful evidence of their respective tours, this newer one is a disappointment. Although the song choices are all together good, the recording (or mixing) is bland and colorless. The drums and guitars have been purposely toned down to give the album a more new-age feel and on the more rhythmic tracks (Optimistique-Moi, Beyond My Control, Dessine-moi un mouton) it just kills. The ballads are breathtaking though, with highlights being the nihilist 'Il n'y a pas d'ailleurs', the heart-breaking 'Dernier sourire' and the show ender 'Innamoramento'. Too much studio touch-ups for a live album that is this expensive and anticipated.

I have read the review of a woman saying that this album is the worst Mylene has ever made. That is simply not having an open mind for something different.

That person is wrong because all of Mylene's albums have been great! I am french and I know that she stands as one of the most beautiful voices in the french musical directory. Her stage acting is awesome and her character is unmatchable.

This album is quite different from her previous ones but everyone has the right to change and it doesn't have to please everyone.

I believe that if you have a bad taste for music, there is no need to share it with everyone.

I recommend to get this album simply because it's part of her comeback. And if you don't like it (which i don't think will happen) simply return it and case closed...

5.0 out of 5 stars Mylene Does It AGAIN!-Like ALWAYS, June 20, 2001

Mylene is awesome live. I saw the show live in Paris in 1999, and I must say the album captures the feeling of the performance. From the background applause and cheers, to the unique mixes only to be found on this album, this is a must to add to your Mylene Collection. From opening the metal gates that inhouse the CDs, it definately points to the fact this is not your normal CD collection. Dramatic photos of the show are in the booklet inside. If you couldn't see her, this is the next best thing. ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful Mylene's live record..., December 10, 2000

This album is unique like almost all Mylene's work but - sorry to say that - a little worse than her previous concert album "Live a Bercy". The quality of sound this time is average and Mylene's voice is sometimes almost missed. But after all the concept of show and realisation are brilliant and Mylene once again proved that she deserves the title of a French pop star number one! I recommend this album and most of all his VHS and DVD version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of energy & fun!, December 15, 2000
This review is from: Mylenium Tour (Audio CD)
Mylene is truly outstanding with the double "Mylenium Tour". It's what I call a great improvement on her live material. Miss Farmer hasn't failed to succeed once again. My wait for France's Diva to make another concert CD is over. Mylene has included all her older biggies and some of her more recent material. Buying the Cd was an extra treat, as I've never seen any of Mylene's new music live

An artist like herself, has to put in much time & effort to bring sold out audiences to her shows. This woman is truly devoted to her talent and her capabilities. The Cd has satisfied my curiosity in the performance category. What I mean is, (what she sounds like) singing the new material live. Sometimes some of Mylene's live songs have been emotional for her, and she didn't seem to be capable of finishing some songs. This time it sounds promising.

Over the years, Mylene's styles have expanded immensely, as well as her sound. This Cd testifies that she has what it takes not only in studio, but onstage above all! The "Mylenium Tour" equals her previous 2 live double Cds. Maybe even better.

I recommend the Cd to any Mylene fan, also recommending it as a gift on your holiday gift list. Give Mylene some credit. Go buy this CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Never fails to give a good concert!, December 30, 2000
This review is from: Mylenium Tour (Audio CD)
Bonjour A Tous. I appologize to Mylene fans for inaccurately reviewing Mylenium Tour in the 1st review. I was off in the clouds. My hands worked faster than my mind. In the last review, I stated that Mylene sang more material from her older albums. This is not true. She sings most of the material from "Innamoramento", plus some older hits. Those hits are "Desenchantée", "Rever", "California", "Beyond my control" and an amusing little medley of some other good Mylene hits.

Note that the box is made of pure brass. It's also extremely fragile. I have never seen such a Cd case. It makes a perfect conversation piece on my coffee table. Mylene's albums come out so different every time. If you want originality, you've got it! If that wasn't cool enough, we get almost 2 hours of concert from this set. Mylene gives more bang for the buck!

The photos are better than in "Live a Bercy". Mylene seems more gothic now, with her hauntingly beautiful repertoire. Her wardrobe is equally sexy than before. I found some of the songs weren't sung with as much enthusiasm as in "Live a Bercy". Instead, the songs are sung in slightly different fashion. "Desenchantée" has more of a relaxed feeling to it. I also noticed that Mylene screams out to her audience less than before.

The backdrop layout onstage is Egyptian based, and on the front cover of the photo book, Mylene is seen floating out of a huge Sphinx head. If you like live music, and you don't mind spending a little more on CDs, this set is for you. She's definately worth listening to anytime. I call her the french version of Madonna. She might sell her body, as well as her voice, but she does a good job doing it! Lastly, I find she loves her audience, as she speaks to them a lot. It's nice to see appreciation from both sides.

Buy this CD double. It was worth the money. Did my review help you?
