mediocre at best,

The problem with this CD is, like many people said, it's made mostly of stuff one can hear on your local alternative radio station. And of this complation, what you can't hear on the radio, sounds like what you do hear on the radio anyways.
The selection is not ecclectic in the least. All of it seems to be men with guitars and typical drab percussion, and an occasional female with guitars (and typical drab percussion), and the same style of singing and lyrics. In other words, it all seems to be of one genre. boooooooring. I really would have liked to see a compliation of artist who got their start on myspace. Stuff few people have ever heard before. Something that's worth purchasing from myspace because you can't buy it anywhere else. Otherwise, what's the point? Chances are anyone who would buy this CD already owns stuff by those artists anyhow. Save some money and make your own mix.

No diversity,

I admit I am a big fan of Myspace. I love discovering new, unsigned or independantly signed artists on its vast website. It was inevitable that a compilation of various Myspace artists would come out. Unfortunately the artists listed on the compilation are pretty bland and uninteresting. 95% is dime store emo (aka whiney white boy rock) and former Playboy model Tila Tequila posing as a rock star. It is so obvious that the founder of Myspace likes this emo. Look at the artists he chose for volume one. Fine if he wants to thrown in artists he likes but from one genre? How boring. There are thousands of artists and bands on Myspace. There should have been a good diversity of different types of music on this compilation rather than sticking to the dime a dozen emo bands which you can't tell from night and day. There are so many great little known artists and bands on Myspace, this would have been a great way to introduce the public to them but instead what the public gets is an obvious attempt at making a few extra bucks from the emo crowd. Here is hoping that future volumes don't look as bad as volume one but frankly I am not holding my breathe anytime soon.

Anyone who would actually consider buying this in probably only in it for the four extra pictures you can upload once you buy the CD.
It is a pure piece of crap. Instead of putting major-record artists on this album, why not put some artists who got their start on Myspace? --Edit: I don't know why it's saying I gave this CD five stars, because I sure as heck did not.

(...)If you like to spend your hard-earned dollars on bands that dissolve faster that an Alka-Seltzer tablet, then invest on this crap-tastic helping of lousy music. If I were in Weezer, I'd be quite upset that I got lumped into this pathetic collaboration of caca. (...)GOsh, you people are sheep.

To tell you the truth, I also enjoy using Myspace a lot now. It took a long time for me to get used to it, because it seemed so scene-and-trend-based for awhile... Then I found some of my favorite artists on there and even got to hear unreleased songs and albums before they were out. This compilation is disappointing if you're looking for the unsigned/independent bands, but otherwise it is not really that bad. A natural problem, though, is that only the first two tracks are unreleased.
The AFI song is pretty good, an outtake of "Sing the Sorrow" that would've fit on there okay. I wasn't a real big fan of the New Years Day song, however.... Then there's other songs which I already have a hold of that are decent, like the Weezer song. However, that's one of the weakest on "Make Believe" and is a bit silly. Against Me! are a nice contrast to the mix as well, acoustic-based punk done well. I'm not a big fan of AAR and Dashboard was too obvious of a choice, but both tracks are okay. A lot of these do fall in the emo/pop-punk territory, but what's disappointing is that it doesn't really use what's great about it. The Click Five can't write song lyrics to save their lyrics and when the vocals are that clear and the music isn't interesting enough, hearing those words annoys me. It's a little catchy though I admit, but that's not always a good thing. More of it is lackluster than anything else; hopefully subsequent compilations are more useful than this. I would give it 2.5, but because of AFI and sympathy, I'm rounding it up a half star.

get to know this group. they have the only good song on the cd. enough to give it 4 stars. they got their start on myspace. they've had over 3million hits in like 4 months. which is amazing. you can't even comment on their myspace and see your comment cuz so many people comment at once.
and.. so ya know.. there are about 6 bands that got their start on myspace.. the others are bands that helped build myspace.. afi, dashboard, all-american rejects.. they've all had their music on myspace since it exsisted.. myspace isn't just for unsigned bands.. its for ALL bands. get a clue of what you're talking about before you bash stuff.

... but not half good either. it's a real shame that half of this CD is composed of major label singles, while most of the 'independant' stuff isnt really that good. the AFI song is pretty good, but not the best. myspace's first artist "hollywood undead" is some kind of rock/rap act, and even though the use of samples from aim is creative and works well, its been done before (hellogoodbye anyone?), and the song really isnt all that great (albeit catchy, its basically some guy yelling about how he likes to get high/drunk and take his pants off at parties...)
there are a few positives, but only a few. im glad there was a song by waking ashland included, but again its not their best. i simply adore the song "melt the sugar" by the summer obsession, and it's the first time its been available to my knowledge. the only other song that i really like on this CD is "ready, aim, misfire" by new year's day, but i'd already been listening to it for a while on their myspace, so nothing new there. all in all it's really not worth it for 4 or 5 decent songs and 4 pictures on your myspace account. it looks like myspace records is out to a bumpy start, and i'm semi-interested what they're gonna do to fix things in the future.

There's a lot of problems with this cd, Let me explain...
1. all the songs sound the same. 2. I wouldn't have mattered much to me if they all sounded the same and were all good, but they all SUCKED 3. Each song was very annoying in every way you can think of. 4. There is too many known artists on here, Like AFI, Fall Out Boy, Weezer,Hollywood Undead (Which was some of the worst music I've heard)and Against Me! (If you've heard of them) I wasn't expecting much from this cd, especially when I looked at the back and noticed a band called Tila Tequila. Thank god i didn't buy this, Because this is a waste of time, money, and space. Myspace records only made this so they can get money out of all the emo and scene kids that like this crap. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CD!!!

I Love This CD!,

I love every song on this CD, and it's not true that the bands are all big bands like everyone says in these reviews. There are 4 unsigned bands and 7 independent artists on this CD. People need to get their facts straight. The only band that could be considered "big" on this CD is Weezer. And who cares? Why not mix bigger bands with lesser known bands. MySpace Records is like MySpace itself--it has major label bands, independents and unsigned bands on the site, why not on the CD? People just want to hate because MySpace is so popular and they think critcizing it makes them cool.

I have no idea why eveyone has such a problem with this compilation... I bought it the other day and have enjoyed most of the songs on it. People are complaining that this disc is full of songs from "Mainstream Artists"? Hmm, maybe I'm just completly off, but with the exception of Weezer and Dashboard Confessional, all the other artists on here are pretty new. New Year's Day and Tia Tequila are as of yet unsigned by a record label, and Hollywood Undead is a new band that Myspace just signed.
So stop bitching about this cd and give it a try. You may just enjoy it... P.S. Why are people comaplaining that Myspace was sold for millions of dollars? Are we just supposed to resent it when something many people enjoy becomes succesful? |
