Very entertaining, even for non-Myst'ers,
This review is from: The Myst Reader (Paperback)
The books are very entertaining and easy to read. The first book starts with a bang, the relationship between the main character (Atrus) and his father Gehn are determined right from the moment he was born.
After that an interesting tale is told, about the D'ni, an ancient underground culture and the descripting art of writing they developped, which makes it possible to travel to the worlds written. This is the perfect basis for endless twists and plots, and the books are over before you even realize it, making you crave for more. These are entertaining books for everybody, but for those who played any of the Myst games or Uru, they are an absolute MUST. They complement and explain the games in such a way that they enrich the games no end. The Myst Reader combines the three books in one volume. Get it now, you won't be disapointed.

Love the stories, but the book itself.....,
By R. K. Hound (ATU) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Myst Reader (Paperback)
I was very excited seeing three of my favorite novels brought together into one book! The stories are wonderfully woven together, description meets plot and dialogue without becoming boring. The character's personalities and their environments are realistic. The authors were very dedicated to their story(which is very cool that they're the creators of the games!) Another wonderful bonus is the illustrations. Not a polished, fake picture, but illustrations that have a charming hand-drawn look. Wonderful stories!
However, I was very disappointed that the book was a paperback. With almost a 1,000 pages, the spine is thick and is easy to crease (I'm anal about my book conditions, sorry.) I was also hoping for some extra material, like the map that was included with some of the previous hardcover editions. The extra details and bonuses are one of the best things about the books. Well, all in all, wonderful stories, great idea of combining them, just make a hardcover and I'll be 100% happy.

Great pick for fantasy lovers,
This review is from: The Myst Reader (Paperback)
The Myst series is a very in depth and imaginative fantasy. I've read the book at least twice each. The Myst Reader set is great, because it contains all three in a nice easy package. Now although the Volumes are in the correct order, i would recommend reading Book 2, the Book of Ti'ana, first. As far as timelines go, Book two comes first.

Good value but incomplete,
By Alyss (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Myst Reader (Paperback)
Excellent value for all three of the Myst books, but it is incomplete. The prophecies, which i most enjoyed, are left out in this edition- why i don't know. The prophecies are very much germain to the novels, and re-reading the books without them was a bit dissapointing. Still overall an excellent value.
The Myst series consists of three novels in which the timeline of the story is broken up into. The first book tells the middle of the story, the second book tells the begining, and the last book tells the end. To read the books in chronological order read 2nd, 1st, 3rd. The premise of the series is that there exists a superior race beneath the earth's surface called the D'ni. The D'ni are capable of writing magic descriptive books that link to other worlds, the potential for which is limitless. Thus they enjoy life in a surreal city of rock with the capability to "link" to any sort of world they wish at any time. One unhappy citizen sets out to ruin the great and ancient city of D'ni, a result of the accidental discovery of D'ni by a surface dwelling human and the events that follow her discovery of their civilization. In the last book, a perfect Utopia like cousin civilization is found, one whose ties with D'ni centuries ago they cannot understand. And then of course, they figure it out. The plot is interesting, but not nearly as interesting as the concepts presented in the books- the different worlds, government structures and creations. If this series had any sort of political message it would be about racial tolerence and equality, for which the book makes a strong argument.

Great Book,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Myst Reader (Paperback)
Upon my interest of the civilization of D'ni, and Riven, I craved for more information, wanting to know so much more about D'ni, it's cluture, background, and structure. So, I ordered this book, and got more than I hopped for. It was exactly what I was looking for. I believe the order in which the books are placed is perfect and I reccomend this book to anyone, adults and children, who likes a good read that keeps you turning pages. If your interested in D'ni, and want to know more, this is the book for you. I can't wait for The Book of Marrim.

I read and re-read these books once a year. It's a great story and they lead into Myst and Riven perfectly. Very entertaining adventure stories even if you've never played the games or don't intend to. I highly recommend them.

I never even knew there was a game that went along with these books! I'm a single mom and not real into computer games, but I love fantasy books! I picked these up about a year ago because they looked interesting, and they are wonderful!

One of the Best books I've read in a long time,

This review is from: The Myst Reader (Paperback)
I have read many books in my lifetime and this is very eliquent and great to read. It follows the game from Myst and Riven. I found that after I read it that I wish I had read the second book first and then the first and thrid.

Entertaining and Deep,
This review is from: The Myst Reader (Paperback)
Nothing like a compilation for tons of good reading. The classic series comes together so even the Myst newcomer can get an in-depth view of the Myst universe in one fell swoop. All three books are compelling. I am not an avid "alternate universe" fan, and I loved these books.
ANY book-lover will be enchanted by the great "what if" contained in the Myst Saga. Highly recommended.

So far the first volume is fine. The binding is very nice for this 3-in-1 set. The book looks nice on the shelf, too, very decorative. I enjoyed Myst and Riven as games. Haven't finished Exile yet. But I look forward to reading these at my leisure.
