February 1, 2009
Russell Martin, author of Beethoven's Hair, and his wife, Lydia Nibley, tell the story of how a lock of Ludwig von Beethoven's hair, clipped from the composer's head on his deathbed in Germany in 1827, ended up in Nazi-occupied Denmark in 1943 and was later sold at auction in London in 1994. Learn about this incredible journey through history and the mysteries revealed about Beethoven's deafness and death. Photographs, correspondence, reserach, and forensics further inform this fascinating story.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5–8—Based on Martin's adult book Beethoven's Hair: An Extraordinary Historical Odyssey and Scientific Mystery Solved (Broadway, 2000), this reworking for a young audience presents an intriguing interdisciplinary story. Martin and Nibley trace the labyrinthine journey of a lock of Beethoven's hair encased in a glass and wooden locket from the 18th century to the present. Using a balanced mix of verifiable research and some conjecture, they explain the lock's odyssey over time and how it was ultimately acquired by two American Beethoven aficionados in 1994. The perseverance and passion of these men provided the impetus for scientific analysis to seek a physiological explanation for Beethoven's lifelong struggle with myriad physical and emotional problems. The contemporary story of the lock's travels and examination is interspersed with the history of Beethoven's musical genius. Aspects of the Holocaust and the courageous defiance of the Nazis by the Danish resistance become a significant part of the mystery. This is a most unusual, thoroughly researched detective story written in a clearly accessible and lively tone. Black-and-white photos and reproductions appear throughout. Concluding notes offer young people advice about research and explain what narrative nonfiction is and how the authors used it in this book. Though obviously a selection suited for research projects, it is also an incredibly readable and absorbing selection that demonstrates the multidimensional nature of true scholarship.—Renee Steinberg, formerly at Fieldstone Middle School, Montvale, NJ

His nonfiction book BEETHOVEN'S HAIR, a United States bestseller and a Washington Post Book of the Year, has been published in twenty-one translated editions and is the subject of a Gemini-award-winning film of the same name. His books have been optioned by Robert Redford's Wildwood Enterprises, the Denver Center Theatre Company, and New World Television. He does more: he sees beyond what is already known; he moves beyond synthesis to new insights. His work is disciplined, analytical, and creative. It is also profoundly humane."

This review is from: The Mysteries of Beethoven's Hair (Hardcover)
This is a fascinating book that not only gives you deep insight into Beethoven the man, but which views history from the date of his death to present day by following a lock of Beethoven's hair taken at his death bed. You will not want to put this down, and once you read it, will want to give it as a gift to every classical music lover you know!

I love the book! It came in good order (as I have come to expect from Amazon) and it was a fascinating read! It is a follow-up on the book titled Beethoven's Hair (by one of the same authors - Russell Martin) and presents the story of the lock of hair from Ludwig van Beethoven in a way that is much more accessible by the middle school age students whom I teach. Thanks for offering this great book!

An interesting mystery set and solved over the time since Beethoven lived and the present. If you are interested in composers and science, this book is very interesting. How great it is that aspects of the unknown reasons why people behave the way they do can be proven because of the advances in science today.
