Although part of the A&E Bible mystery series, this 45-minute installment examines a historical puzzle not included in the Bible: the failed Jewish uprising against the Romans three decades after Jesus' execution. Using eight people as touchstones (such as Masada resistance leader Eleazar ben Jair and rebel-turned-historian Josephus), narrator Richard Kiley traces the beginnings of the revolt through massacres like the one at Gamala, leaving just two survivors, to the (accidental?) burning of the temple in Jerusalem. Jean Simmons reads from the only surviving account of the times, penned by Josephus himself. The mystery stems from the question of Josephus's reliability as a historian, since the Jewish rebel is considered a traitor for making a pact with the Romans, and from the fact that he leaves large gaps in his writings. This installment proves to be one of the most fascinating of the series, as it focuses on events little known to those whose knowledge of those times ends where the Bible does.
