4.0 out of 5 stars A reference book for the paranormal
In this one volume, the editors at time life have combined all the books in their popular "Mysteries of the Unknown" series. Using a combination of scientific theory and interesting narratives, this book covers all types of paranormal activity from ghosts to UFO's to ESP. My only complaint is that there could have been more illustrations, otherwise this book...

This review is from: Mysteries of the Unknown (Paperback)
For those who don't know, the Mysteries of The Unknown book series was started in the late 80s; it was sort of a follow-up to the "Enchanted World" series that Time-Life released earlier that decade--except this time it was from more of a scientific than mythological point of view. The books tended to be sensationsalist, the scientific data and counter-arguments always contained in the end of the book so not as to ruin anyone's fun. However, those who kept their subscriptions for the duration recieved a treat near the end when the books started to get more in-depth and introspective: books such as "Cosmic Duality", "Search For The Soul" and "Time and Space" are all excellent books which dealt with some of the more mysterious aspects of our everyday life. Unfortunately, the books colleceted in this volume are from the first half; with the exception of "Dreams and Dreaming"; which was one of the last, and best, books of the series. The entire text of the following books is contained within: Mystic Places, The UFO Phenomenon, Psychic Voyages, Phantom Encounters, Mysterious Creatures, Transformations, Visions and Prophecies, Mind over Matter, Cosmic Conncetions, Dreams and Dreaming, Magical Arts, and Witches and Witchcraft.

Therefore, if you are interested in any of these things, or are trying to find copies of said books, buy this one. Time-Life should really consider putting the missing books into a second volume, since the ones which are left out were some of the best of the series.

The MoTU books which are NOT included are as follows: Psychic Powers, Spirit Summoning, Ancient Wisdom and Secret Sects, Hauntings, Powers of Healing, Search for The Soul, Time and Space, Utopian Visions, Secrets of the Alchemists, Cosmic Duality, Eastern Mysteries, The Psychics, and Earth Energies.
