In a sequel to The Shroud of Turin, Wilson delivers a balanced account of results from tests by STURP (Shroud of Turin Research Project, in Italy) in 1978. He details findings that convince him that the Shroud is Christ's burial cloth, a conclusion supported by Miller's photos. In color and black-and-white, the illustrations show the imagethe positive side of the fabric's negative imprintof a human being. Wilson, nevertheless, also reports theories of experts who claim the Shroud is a forgery, and he speculates on answers that may be forthcoming from further technical examinations, including the possibility of carbon dating. His reasonable and lucid account should attract many readers, skeptics as well as those who believe in the miraculous nature of the Shroud. February 28

Wilson, author of The Shroud of Turin ( LJ 3/15/78), here brings up to date the debate about this alleged burial shroud of Jesus. Most importantly, he includes a great many high quality photographs by Miller, the chief photographer of the original Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP). In the first four chapters Wilson reviews background information about the shroud and the 1978 Research Project that opened much of the present discussion. He then answers the objections raised by skeptics and speculates on future testing possibilities. The book is an excellent short overview for anyone interested in the shroud controversy. The bibliographies are particularly good, including one on the papers published by the original STURP scientists. Recommended for academic and public libraries where there is reader interest. C. This book is a discussion about the investigation into the mysterious cloth known as the Shroud of Turin. By now, almost everyone is familiar with the faint 3-D image visible only in X-rays and with the ongoing battle over its authenticity. The Vatican allowed a small sliver to be used for experimental purposes while putting out the word through various agencies that this was not the cloth that wrapped a Jew who lived and died 2,000 years ago.

What is confounding is that Ian Wilson also authored another work titled JESUS: THE EVIDENCE, in which he fairly succinctly comes to the conclusion that (1) the scriptures were written as religious - not historyical - documents, (2) that Jesus never thought of himself as the Messiah, (3) that the idea of a "son" of Jehova was not only unacceptable but blasphemous to observant Jews - only the pagans believe that Gods could father earthly children and (4) most important, that it is fairly obvious that Jesus did not rise from the dead on the "third day" (actually 36 hours).

Saying all this, how can he assert that the Shroud was formed through unknown supernatural events? In the book he examines the physical evidence, the anthropological and social history and the various suppositions, arguments and theories that have arisen as a result of various statements. THis is a good book but more explanation is needed in light of his earlier work.
