Biography

Mickey Hart is best known for his nearly three decades as an integral part of an extraordinary expedition into the soul and spirit of music, disguised as the rock and roll band the Grateful Dead. As half of the percussion tandem known as the Rhythm Devils, Mickey and Bill Kreutzmann transcended the conventions of rock drumming. Their extended polyrhythmic excursions were highlights of Grateful ... Read more in Amazon's Mickey Hart Store

Editorial Reviews

2012 album from the three time Grammy winning percussionist and Grateful Dead drummer. With Mysterium Tremendum, Hart is pushing the boundaries of what we know as music, creating a genre of his own. For this new work Hart joined with long time Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter to pen the words for these songs. ''Hunter is a bold visionary writer who knows where I am going with this music,'' says Hart. ''He is indispensable to the weave of this story.''

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic cd with Hart! June 16, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a consummate music buyer this is my top pick for 2012 so far. It is my belief that seldom does the best music ever get heard. This cd deserves to be heard and then heard again and again. It breaks new ground for Hart. It it catchy, it has hooks, you will sing along to it. It is a solid album with great performances and writing and a sonic depth that is seldom heard. This is a purchase for both the music lover and the true audiophile.

Of interest is that in sound it is a true break away from any semblance of the Grateful Dead. Being a Deadhead I thought this might be a disappointment; but in truth it follows suit with "7 Walkers" and Phil Lesh's "There and Back again" in that it dares to break new ground and is "further" ahead for it.

This is a truly astounding, solid cd with no filler. I hoestly love every track. If I had to pick highlights it would probably be: "Slow Joe Rain", "Cut the Deck", "Let there be Light" and Through Endless Skies" but that is a disservice to so many other great songs contained on this collection.

What makes this CD so Special? It has Hart...the pun is intended and deserved. In having heart it has a music for the masses top layer, and a depth of thought and intelligence under layer that adds an appeal that adds dimension even after repeated listens.

The band is listed simply as "performers" Although I could site some great guests and players on this cd, the strength of the cd is the performance. Simply- the sound is unified and everyone stands out; which makes it unnecessary to credit the individual. It is proper to offer a nod to Robert Hunter for the lyrics to many of the songs, but only because both the music and the lyrics resonate in your head long after the cd is over.

I also need to acknowledge the depth of sound on this cd in a process referred to as "sonification." I could write a whole review of the sound quality of the cd. I am running this through a Denon amp with Klipsch towers and paradigm surrounds. I owns thousands of cds- sonically this falls into my top 3. This is the ONLY cd I own that sounds equally good in both stereo and surround. Every element of this cd sounds like it was a labor of love for Mickey Hart and company with the ultimate benefit being shared with the listener.

On so many levels this cd amazes me. Are you going to hear it on the radio? No. Are the masses going to buy it? No. Should it be in your collection regardless of your typical music preference? Most certainly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative new direction for Mickey Hart April 13, 2012
By Fred B
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
While I love hearing Phil and Bobby tour with Furthur, it's exciting to hear new material from original members of the Grateful Dead. This album combines new lyrics from Robert Hunter, with interesting new rhythms with a techno beat and bluesy vocals. Mickey has taken World Music to a new level- Extra Terrestrial. Listen and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heard these tunes live at the Rock Hall - Amazing! April 12, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Last night at the Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Mickey Hart Band played for almost 2 hours on a stage surrounded by Rock Hall members - and man did they sound awesome! They did many tunes from this album as well as old Grateful Dead favorites as this was the opening night of the Dead exhibition. They could not have sounded any better and because of that, this CD was just purchased. The snippets you hear on-line for each song do NOT give the songs justice - they are amazing if you like techno based music with a fantastic groovy beat.

This is the best since Music Box. The groove is on, vocals teetering on Peter Gabriel and plenty of space music, but not to much. The ambiance of this album is wonderful. Read more
