A VERY GOOD Monster Book!, March 21, 2003
This review is from: Mystery Animals of Britain and Ireland (Hardcover)
This was one of my first monster books and is still one of the best monster books you can buy. There are chilling pictures in this book so Beware! - this book is the stuff of nightmares if you don't have the mind for viewing pictures of sea-serpents and lake monsters.
It contains lots of pictures of wild cats, nessie, morgawr(very good coverage!), falmouth bay sea serpent (very good coverage!)and lots more. It also has sections on UK birdmen and UK mothmen type creatures. The research is very good and I always turn to this book for details on monster hunts and reports of long ago (First hand information is roughly from 1950 to early 1980. Second hand and third hand stuff can go back as far as late 1800's, all UK and Ireland).
Although the book does not cover everything monsterish in the UK and Ireland it certainly does a good job of covering a lot of different mysterious animals and for this... and the time it was printed... gives it the full 5 star treatment. You will be impressed with this book if you have any interest in monsters. There is plenty of text to read through.
There are many photographs in the book. I think about 40 + or so. Some of them are rare!
The book is currently priced at something like $100.00 because it is out of print. If you want my opinion this is what I have to say about it. I think if you are really into rare monster books AND IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN RESEARCH!!! then it is a steal at the price and well worth much more just based on the information that is in the book. I am not saying that the photographs or text can not be found on the internet, it is just that the book itself is very very nice and well worth its place on any monster book collectors shelf.....
Another tip I will give you is to search amazon.co.uk for a way cheaper prices on this book but again I would hate to see a RARE book like this fall into the wrong hands because it costs £5.00 from the other sites out there.
If you are a serious researcher then buy it. Don't think twice about it... just do it.
