From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. Okracoke Islanders Billy, Daniel, Stephanie, and Mark love Mrs. McNemmish's tales of her ancestor, the great pirate Blackbeard. One day she tells them that, when she dies, whoever buries her at sea will be greatly rewarded. A few days later, she is dead, and the kids steal her casket to provide the sea grave she requested. Later they discover an old chest that serves as a doorway to a dark and mysterious cave, and forced through the entryway by a greedy islander, they soon find themselves in a dark tunnel filled with bones and buried treasure. The dialogue is occasionally stilted, and it's the action and adventure, not the characters, that move the story along. But committed fans of pirate tales will enjoy this, along with girls who like books featuring female characters who aren't afraid to face adventure head on. Cindy Welch

More About the Author

I started my first career as a ballerina dancing with the National Ballet, New York City Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, and the Danny Diamond Dance Theatre. I also served as alignist and choreographer for the U.S Figure Skating Team in preparation for the Pan American Games (1973), and for the 1976 Olympic Gymnastics team. In 1980 I became too ill with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) to continue dancing. Because I had done a lot of children's theatre and children's dance, and I have always enjoyed children's literature, I turned to writing children's books for my creative outlet.

But my writing career actually began much earlier than 1980. When I was a young girl, I had two older brothers who took great joy in teasing me.

When I was in the fourth grade, I began keeping journals of the silly things they would say and do. Then I began adding things my pets did. Finally, I began to write down everything I saw and heard every day.

When I was in my early twenties, my mother found my journals and I turned the stories into my first book called, Happy Apple Told Me. But, I learned a very hard lesson writing that first book. I learned that you don't just write a book; you rewrite, and rewrite, and rewrite, and rewrite a book. Thirty years later, I am still learning.

My passionate advocacy for children continually molds my writing style and subject matter. I have taken my one-woman educational program, The Writing Penn, into schools, libraries, and children's hospitals, where I shape and refine my story ideas in partnership with kids.

My favorite part about being a children's author is meeting my readers when I speak at a school or at a store. I get so many wonderful ideas from you, and you, and you. So, thank you for your inspired ideas, and letters, and emails. Now, it's your turn to keep a journal.

I live with my husband, my youngest daughter (who inspired The Kissing Hand), and two dogs in Olney, Maryland. We have three children and one foster child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for a rainy afternoon, October 21, 2004

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Mystery at Blackbeard's Cove (Hardcover)
I'm always on the prowl for a good book for my 9-year-old granddaughter to read and was delighted to run across the beautifully illustrated and well-written book, MYSTERY AT BLACKBEARD'S COVE, by Audrey Penn. Having spent part of the summer on the Outer Banks in NC this year, I was intrigued with the history of the area, so I thought it a good idea to share something of the area with my 9-year-old through this exciting kids' book. What I like so much about the book is that the characters are so realistic--Stefanie is the typical whiny, skeptical pre-teen girl, not alwasy likable, who flings herself headlong into all sorts of chilling and spooky adventures just to keep up with the boys, not wanting to miss any of the excitement. However, the mystery that unfolds throughout the book makes this one a real page-turner. The old woman, Mrs.McNemmish, is a beloved elder of the community whom the children love to visit; it is she who keeps the local folklore alive in her storytelling, and it is she who holds the secret to the mystery.
Because this is a book with a strong emphasis on setting, MYSTERY AT BLACKBEARD'S COVE is a refreshing break from the fantasy that's been flooding the market for several years in kids' lit. What a wonderful way to draw children back into an interest in regional history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Adventure Story for Kids!, October 14, 2004
This review is from: Mystery at Blackbeard's Cove (Hardcover)
What an exciting story about pirates, secret treasure, hidden tunnels, and more!

When four kids get trapped in a dark, seemingly-endless tunnel by an evil scoundrel (and direct descendant of one of Blackbeard's crew), you can't wait to find out what happens next and how it will end! From one compelling twist to the next, it keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The characters are interesting and very relatable for kids, and the action is non-stop. I really liked this book!
