Review

“There are two kinds of people in the world, those who read Trixie and those who don’t. Which are you?”—Merrilee Wilkerson, Book People, Austin, TX

“Parents, be warned: Nostalgic feelings may draw you in, causing a tussle over who’s going to read first.”—The Dallas Morning News

4.0 out of 5 stars If It Weren't For That Prophecy..., May 30, 2005

This review is from: The Mystery of the Blinking Eye (Trixie Belden # 12) (Hardcover)
The Bob-Whites are in New York City for a few days to show their friends Ned Schulz and Bob and Barbara Hubbell around. While waiting for their flight to come in from Iowa, Trixie notices a strange Mexican woman who can't find her flight. After helping, the woman gives Trixie a purse with a fortune inside.

A couple hours later, Trixie spies an idol so ugly it's cute she just has to buy. But almost immediately, some thugs are following the teens around. Are they after the idol? Why? Can Trixie use the prophecy to solve the case before more danger strikes?

This is a fun book in the series. Not only are all seven Bob-Whites along for the adventure but we get to spend more time with friends we've made earlier in the series, a rare treat. The tour of New York City is fun and the plot lively and entertaining enough to keep you glued to the book. My problem with it is the prophecy. I don't believe in fortune telling and so have a very hard time accepting that part of the plot.

Most fans of the Trixie books like the prophecy, which makes me the exception to the rule. Other then that, it's a great case that will entertain Trixie's many fans.

I've read them all - I own them all. Trixie Belden has been one of my favorites since I was very young.

1.0 out of 5 stars I love Trixie, but this book was painful., June 21, 2010

This review is from: The Mystery of the Blinking Eye (Trixie Belden # 12) (Hardcover)
As someone who grew up scouring used bookstores for a Trixie Belden book, or often stayed up in to the early morning hours just to finish the next mystery, I regretfully say that this is one of the worst books I have ever read and hands down the worst Trixie Belden book I have come across.

This book is not so much a mystery as it is a just pages filled with cliche "mysterious" turn of events that are supposed to keep the reader interested. Basically, Trixie buys a mysterious antique wooden idol and after that she is followed by creepy men. And randomly a prophesy made by a Mexican woman is thrown into the story for (it seems) no reason other than to have a prophesy.

Where is the Trixie I know and love? The courageous, smart, and adventure hungry Trixie that uses her brain and keen sense to solve mysteries? In this book all Trixie does is run away from the creepy men who are after her idol. The mystery happens to just solve itself, no thanks to anyone in the Bob-White gang, and Trixie makes ridiculously stupid decisions that are completely out of character. And to top it all off, the book is filled cover-to-cover with words like "Jeepers!" "Golly!" and "Wonderfully wonderful!" Seriously, the 50s cliches are at an extreme in this book.

As much as I adore the series, I would never recommend "Trixie Belden and the Mystery of the Blinking Eye." (The title doesn't even fit!!!)
