2.0 out of 5 stars Great graphics, not very interesting
I bought this based on the good reviews here. I agree that it is beautifully done but I found the game downright tedious. There is no mystery to solve, just a list of items to find in various settings. Now and then there are 'puzzles' but with only one exception, they are simple and require no real thought.

There are so many things to find and different ways to find them (xray, underwater goggles, flashlight). There are other things to do other than look for hidden pictures. There are puzzles that you have to piece together and contraptions you have to figure out. I've been playing it for three days straight and I'm not even close to finding out the mystery. This is a great game!!! Even my 7 year old looks over my shoulder as I play it and helps me find stuff. If you love the PC versions - then you will love this one too.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT GAME FOR MIDDLE-AGED MOTHERS!, October 15, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir (Video Game)
This is an awesome game! I am a middle-aged mother and this is one of the my first DS games - I couldn't put it down! My husband threatened to take my DS away from me I became so engrossed in this game. I can't wait for a sequel! I'm not into fighting games or sports games and crossword puzzles, etc. get boring after awhile, but I've played this game completely through two times now. I like the mini-games for a change of pace and the added difficulty in finding objects with a flashlight or the x-ray machine game me just the right challenge to keep me coming back for more and not becoming bored. I love to put zigsaw puzzles together in the wintertime so the mini-game zigsaw puzzles were an added treat. I also found the storyline added some fun by creating an end goal other than just completely the current screen or puzzle. There aren't a lot of games out there for a middle-aged mother, but this is definitely one of them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing depth for a portable game, September 16, 2008
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir (Video Game)
Mystery Case Files (MCF) games are the standard by which all other hidden object games should be measured - and they all fall short! The MCF objects are seamlessly integrated into the background; the game developers use the colors and shapes to place the objects such that you really have to LOOK for the items. I will often look at a previously viewed area of a scene, only to suddenly SEE things there that I didn't notice before. However, I was a little nervous about buying this particular game, for the DS. I have all of the PC versions and love them, but I was worried that the creators might make a "smaller" game all around, by having fewer areas to explore, or removing the mini games, or not really making the effort to use the unique features of the Nintendo DS.

I am happy to say I do NOT regret the purchase! The game is AMAZING - it took me about 8 hours over several days to complete the game in "rookie" mode (not timed), and I am now running through it again as a full "detective" (timed mode), with a third play mode yet to be unlocked. The game is VERY re-playable - different characters become pivotal, and the item lists change each time. With so many items hidden per scene, you can have a unique experience even on the 10th play-through of the game.

The scenes fully live up to the Mystery Case Files standard - objects are well hidden, and realistic looking. The locations are beautiful and unique, with areas like a gem mine, an outdoor koi pond, and the interior of a clock tower. The characters and dialogue are also top-notch - they use the trademark MCF art style in the character design, and there are lots of puns in the character names and interactions.

They kept several innovations from MCF: Madam Fate. First, some areas are "embedded" in other screens, such as the interior of a cuckoo clock, entered by tapping the sparkly blue glow in a scene. Second, some object lists require finding multiple versions of the same item - find 12 paperclips and 10 bottles, for example. They also kept the puzzles and mini games (I've seen at least 5 so far), so there's lots to do in addition to finding things. They've even added a few new object-finding tools, in addition to the flashlight - an x-ray machine (my favorite - the cat in the "normal view" suddenly becomes a cat skeleton, GREAT attention to details!) and underwater goggles, for peering into cloudy water-covered areas.

I was originally worried about the small screen size of the DS making it hard to find objects, but don't worry - you see the full scene on the top screen, with a zoomed-in view in the lower screen. You move your [rectangular] field of view around the image by either dragging the stylus, using the directional pad on the left, or using the four buttons on the right. I tend to use the D-pad with my left thumb, while keeping the stylus in my right hand to tap on found objects.

They also use the features unique to the DS - the microphone, for blowing out fires or dusting for prints, and the shoulder buttons, which allow you to toggle drawing on-screen. The drawing / stylus combo adds a dimension to finding listed items that you don't get with the earlier PC versions - for example, find a "deflated football". The only one on screen is inflated, so you have to hold the shoulder button and use the stylus to draw / puncture the football.

The game quality is excellent, the graphics are impressive, and replay value is high. Overall, this is a great addition to the Mystery Case Files series, and I highly recommend it!

If you're looking for a "Where's Waldo" type of entertainment, I highly recommend this game. The detail is astonishing, particularly in X-Ray mode. As a mystery, it misses the mark.

2.0 out of 5 stars Repetitive, quick & easy, prefer reading a book, September 26, 2008
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir (Video Game)
After seeing 10 reviews and this having a 5 star overall rating (9 five and 1 four), I couldn't resist picking this game up for under 20 bucks.

I'm a 34 year old male who usually enjoys sports simulations, rpg, adventure, and puzzle and family games.

It feels very much like the I Spy games or Hidden Mystery games on the PC. It contains very little story with very short interactions with the suspects. You do virtually nothing to 'solve' the mystery other than find random items within a picture and solve some simple puzzles. The items are completely random and don't even go along with the story or setting (ie: within the garden you find a bundle of junk the millionheir left there)

Then to top things off, you suddenly have to perform some silly task before you can get information from a suspect (like fix a clock or find some ingredients for a recipe). I thought I was supposed to be a detective.

It had a few nice tools, like the usage of a flash light, x-ray pen, and straw (microphone) to blow things around the screen.

Professor Laytons Curious Village was a mystery / puzzle game that was much better than this. It's puzzles revolved more around logic and reasoning rather than seek and find. Millionheir feels more like a word search with pictures (I would choose this over a word search) that have little to nothing to do with the plot.

I skipped the rookie mode and chose detective mode (you are given a limited amount of time to find the clues within a picture). I had at least half the time left for each picture except one. I never felt rushed to hurry and solve the task at hand even without using the hint button. Upon completion, you do get more difficult settings if you feel like replaying it again...but I don't have an interest in completing a game just to find different items within the pictures.

Other reviewers call this a 'thinking' game, but I find there are much better 'thinking' games out there (Professor Layton, Flash Focus, Brain Age, most adventure games, most rpg games, and most strategy games).

Based on the reviews, there is definitely a population that enjoys it, so be sure to read their reviews to see if you have similar interests as I seem to be in the minority and not the target audience for this game.

The nice thing about this game is the price relative to most DS games, BUT I would have enjoyed reading 3 new mystery novels for the same price (10+ used mystery novels).

1.0 out of 5 stars very disappointing, September 18, 2009
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir (Video Game)
I'm a grandma who doesn't enjoy the action type games my grandson loves. Prefer games like Prof Layton. I noted the overall good ratings given this game and gave it a try. I found it to be just boring. It's view after view of "find the hidden object" with a few non-thinking puzzles thrown in. The gimmicks like underwater and flashlight contribute nothing. I played all the way through to the end waiting for something interesting to happen, but unfortunately it never did. I guess if you are a person who likes "find the hidden object" games, this is OK, but I did not like it, and am sorry I wasted my money on it. I'm not in general a critical person, and do not enjoy submitting such a negative review, but it's truly how I feel about this game.

Mystery Case File: Million heir is similar to an I Spy game, I would recommend buying it new though instead of used. The game has "files" and as you find the stuff it unlocks more files, but if the game is used there are files already unlocked and there is no way to erase the opened files or start over. So you are just picking up were the first owner left off. Just NOT as fun a doing it all yourself. There is still a quick find game option. It is a fun and addictive game. Keeps my husband entertained for a while.

It took awhile, but MCF finally made it to the DS, and it's a great match! MCF titles are the best of the hidden-object games, and this has all the goofiness and great graphics of the PC versions. Hope there are more of these to come for DS.

This review is from: Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir (Video Game)
MCF: MillionHeir for DS is such fun! It reminded me so much of the I SPY books that children and even adults all enjoy. As an adult, I am enjoying the fun and challenge of this game. The stylus makes it fun to find things and to often figure out the mystery of how to get things to work in order to find them. I was looking for something with puzzle type games like Professor Layton and this one caught my eye. It will keep doing that as it seems to have never ending puzzles in this game. I highly recommend it for adults and children 8 and up!
