Review

“There are two kinds of people in the world, those who read Trixie and those who don’t. Which are you?”—Merrilee Wilkerson, Book People, Austin, TX

“Parents, be warned: Nostalgic feelings may draw you in, causing a tussle over who’s going to read first.”—The Dallas Morning News

About the Author

In the 1940s, Julie Campbell was running her own literary agency when Western Publishing put out a call for talented authors to write mystery series for kids. Julie proposed the Trixie Belden series and wrote the first 6 titles herself, but books 7–39 were written by a variety of writers all under the pseudonym Kathryn Kenny.

Michael Koelsch works in many different styles for many different markets, including advertising, entertainment, and publishing. He recently received a Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators, NY.

When Honey and Jim invited the Bob-Whites to vacation on Cobbett's Island, Trixie announces she just wants to relax. None of her friends believe her, and it turns out they are right. On the night they arrive, a fierce storm hits the island, and the Bob-Whites find a letter in the library of the house they are staying in. It sounds like some money was hidden years ago. But who hid it? Is it still there? And where might they find the map? Meanwhile, they've befriended their neighbor Peter who introduces them to the wonderful sport of sailing. Might his knowledge help them find the money?

I knew this was a favorite in the series, but I had forgotten just how much I enjoyed it until I reread it. Yes, the plot gets a little slow at times, but all in all, it's a lot of fun and comes together in the end for a very satisfying solution. The characters are the best versions of themselves without some of their flaws being over exaggerated like in other books in the series. Even Diana is able to contribute and doesn't come across as a fraidy cat. The only thing that could make it better is if Dan had been able to go.

This adventure in the series is certainly not to be missed.

Great book! Glad they re-published them although I wish they would do the whole series not just up to #15. These are classics next to Nancy Drew. My daughter loves them! I grew up with Trixie and Nancy and loved them.

I read these to my Third Grade Class and they love them. Even though they were published a long time ago the kids love the mystery in the stories

Trixie Belden books hold a special place in the heart of many readers, of which I am definitely one and this is Trixie at her best. A big fan favourite, this book gives many of our beloved Bob-Whites a chance to shine. Who can forget the boat race, the trip to Jimmy's place, and my personal fave, Brian grabbing Honey's hand and heading for the barn! This series promoted friendship and a willingness to help others and wrapped it up in a fun mystery. If you like Trixie and haven't read this one, it is a must.
