4.0 out of 5 stars Great retro game
I am always super happy to find a remake of a toy from the 70's that I remember. This game will sit in my collection and not get played with. I had trouble with the pictures of the dates that go behind the door. They are too thin and tear off the hinge. Just in putting it together I had one tear but managed to get it to work anyhow. Otherwise it is a nice game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Classic Mystery Date I Remember!
Although this is a very fun game, and a blast from my past, I was expecting the Original Mystery Date game with the 1960-1870 dud date guy.

This is still a fun game to play but the guys are nothing like the guys in the original game. Now they were hunks with their white tux coat and peg leg pants, and the dud, was truly someone you might feel sorry for...

My 10 year old daughter purchased this game with a suggestion from me. I told her how much I enjoyed it as a child. When it arrived we dug right in. This game is simple enough that my six year old also could enjoy it. We had good mother and daughter fun and my girls enjoy playing it with their friends.

Me and my tween and teen girls have a blast playing this classic game just as my sister and I did when we were young! It's good, clean, simple fun and opens up a great dialogue about what to look for in an acceptable companion, etc. I would recommend it for anyone with girls who wants a peek into how she thinks about her dating future (or present!).

Mystery Date is a fun game, came in great condition, turning the knob can be tricky, might end up with the same guy if you turn it the same way. not challenging by any means. overpriced.

My 9 year old daughter and I were shopping and she spotted the mystery date game. I could not believe it! I grabbed it and hugged it to my chest! Finally! I had been waiting 30 years to be able to call this game my own. I thought we would play it once and I would put it away to keep for always. NOT! My daughter is an addict. She will not stop playing the game. She even plays it by herself. This game is truly a game that has held it's appeal through the ages. I am so happy they brought it back. Now my daughter can keep the game and play it with her daughter someday. Every little girl should have the Mystery Date game!

Will they ever put out the original version of the game? That is the one I would wait for, even if I dated the dud!

Cute little game from the past. I bought it just for the nostalgic value. This game is more fun if played while in an inebriated state.

Just be careful when buying vintage games online. The newer ones look old but are not vintage. This particular game was listed as vintage but was not. It also came with a vintage price...

3.0 out of 5 stars Game that was played in Season 7, ep25 of The Simpsons, January 16, 2012
= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mystery Date: Open the Door to Reveal Your Perfect Match ...Or Mismatch! [BOX SET] (Toy)
Bought this game when it was spotted in an old toy store. Also recognized it as the game from a Simpsons episode, which was what spurred the purchase.

(its the episode where the Simpsons go on vacation at Ned's beach house, and Lisa tries to be cool and finds some cool kids under the pier. Meanwhile Bart gets stuck playing the only game they could find inside Ned's beach house with his family and Milhouse.)

The game play goes as follows-
Up to four players can play at a time, and the objective of the game is to go around the board and doing what the squares tell each player to do. The squares mainly tell the player to take a card from the draw pile, or swap a card from another player, take one from the discard pile, or open the door. Which is pretty much what the gimmick of the game lies. The cards that the players pick up consists of different outfits, which the players have to decide which to keep or discard, as each hand can only consist of up to 6 cards at the end of any turn. These different outfits get the player ready for the mystery date, which they need 3 cards to complete an outfit. Once the outfit is completed, and they end up rolling a number that gets them onto a square that reads "OPEN THE DOOR," they turn the handle which is the randomizer for the dates, and see if they are dressed correctly for their dates.

Example: you have in your hand, goggles, ski jacket, and snowboard. you open the door and you get a guy dressed like james bond. thats the wrong outfit, since you should have instead in your hand the outfit that should at least have a dress in it. so the door closes, and the game continues. If however, you had opened the door, and there was a guy with his feet stuck in a snowboard, you have won the game, because your outfit matches the date. (altho how he was able to walk up to your doorstep with his feet strapped to a snowboard was very impressive enough.)

Now the twist in the game was if you got the nerd. (i'm wondering how old the original version was, as the nerd looks like a hipster from this era.) The outfits in the game were only for four different dates, but there was five dates the players could get. If the door was opened, and the nerd was standing behind the door, then the outfit the player had ready to match up with the desired date was lost and had to make another outfit for the next time they landed on an "open the door" square. (wow, i can't tell if the nerd was unlucky or not, if he showed up to a girl's house, he somehow got the girl's outfit and no date?)

The box read that it was for ages 7 and up. I couldnt believe that the game already wanted to "teach" girls at such a young age about dressing up and to avoid the "nerdy" guys, when in this time and age, the nerds are able to be any of the other types of guys as well.
