This review is from: MYSTERY OF THE DEADLY DOUBLE (Three Investigators Mystery) (Paperback)
This isn't anything against the book, but now i understand why this was banned in South Africa when it was released. (You see, in Canada, we can get books from the US & the UK, so i tried to get both editions. The UK version prints to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and S Africa usually, but this book was banned)The story not very subtly smacks apartheid in the face! PLOT SPOILERS: Jupe has a lookalike who is the son of an important functionary in a small African country where said functionary is working to put much of the government back in the hands of the black majority. Racist extremists whites want to kidnap this son (Ian Carew) to force the father to give up his plans. They accidently kidnap Jupiter instead, and this leads our heroes to become involved in this mystery. The Three Investigators is a young adult mystery series that gets things right-it never talks down to younger readers, and is still quite interesting for me to read today (at 36). I highly recommend this book! (I know my plot synopsis is a bit vague, but i can't give away all the secrets, can i?) |
