Gr 4-6-Following the death of their parents, Eddie, 12, and his 10-year-old sister, Anita, are thrust into their grandparents' traditional, reservation lifestyle, a vast change from the modern life of apartments and television that they are used to. When the children become involved in tracking down a group of people illegally removing pottery from ancient Anasazi sites, they question, and ultimately come to terms with, their role in Navajo society. The plot has some twists and turns, but sophisticated mystery readers will find little challenge in the clues and secret messages. A glossary helps with the Navajo words scattered throughout the story. In her desire to show the beauty and value of Navajo culture, Abbott is occasionally unnecessarily demeaning to others. (``Those stupid Anglos.''). Pen-and-ink illustrations introduce many chapters. An admirable attempt to provide a multicultural mystery, but one that isn't totally successful.-Jeanette Larson, Texas State Library, Austin
