Stephanie J. Block, in particular, reminded me a lot of Betty Buckley.

A much better recording than the original cast recording, preserving more of the show and a great cast.

I'm old enough to have seen (and loved) the original production back in the 80's!

I received this CD today and have already listened to it 3 times. There are many pluses to this new recording, and few minuses. Unlike many other Roundabout productions this is with a full orchestra. To my ear it sounds like the original orchestrations and probably are since both productions 1985 and 2012 are orchestrated by the composer. An English Music Hall and An English Gentleman are added, both were in the original in it's premier Central Park production but cut from the original Broadway show. The Name of Love is moved from Act 1 to early Act 2. The Opium Den Ballet is at last recorded. The voting scene is recorded. As in the OBC cd first release all the killers confessions are here. And Last edition is the Lovers scene at the end with a reprise of perfect strangers. This recording definitely gives you a full feel of the show. Stephanie J. Bloch in the title role has a voice that equals Betty Buckley's in the original, but it might have been interesting to hear a new take on her songs. My only reservation was Chita Rivera. I am a long time fan of Ms Rivera but here she just can't hold a candle to Cleo Laine on the OBC. The fold out booklet has many photos and extensive notes. And as a 2cd set it is a great bargain. If you're a fan of this show this is a welcome addition to the OBC. If you are new to this show you should get it. It's a great addition to your library.

It is a rare case when a revival recording can match the original in your affections. Full disclosure: This is my favorite musical of all time, it being the first I ever saw live, on tour, way back in the late 1980's, so I may be a tad biased. This production I have seen twice and plan on seeing twice more before it closes in March.

There are many charms of this 2-disk recording. For example:
The score is more complete. We get "A British Subject" and "The Opium Den Ballet," as well as the revised lyrics for the Murderer Confessions, (plus Robert Creighton's "Durdles Confession"!), and the "Don't Quit While You're Ahead" Encores, and a clever presentation of the "Perfect Strangers" reprise.
The cast is phenomenal. Will Chase is a perfect melodramatic matinee idol. Stephanie J. Block uses her warm, powerful voice to great effect as the title character. Betsy Wolfe plays the sweet ingenue with a saucy side. Andy Karl and Jessie Mueller are delightful as the Landless siblings from Ceylon, Neville and Helena. Jim Norton's Chairman is the epitome of charm. The Princess Puffer, originally a star turn by Cleo Laine is played here by Chita Rivera. While I agree with another reviewer who says that Ms. Rivera can't match Ms. Laine's vocals, she does have her own trump card: She's Chita.
The orchestra is lush and full and under the expert handling of Paul Gemignani. His touches and tweaks are, of course,giggle-inducingly perfect.

A couple drawbacks include:
Only two "Out On A Limerick" selections. Granted, they are wonderful, (Peter Benson's Bazzard, and Jessie Mueller's Helena), but it would have been great to hear more of Gregg Edelman's daffy take on Reverend Crisparkle or more of Wolfe and Karl.

Before seeing this show a few months ago, my only past with the show was listening to the OBCR, which I must admit I never actually listened to through, I just pick and chose songs like The Writing on the Wall, There You Are!, or Don't Quit While You're Ahead. That was foolish of me. While the 3 songs listed are great, it turned out I was missing out on a whole score of amazing tunes.

After seeing the Broadway Revival I had a few immediate thoughts; This needs a cast album, I am so happy, and I want to see it again and again and again. Well, the album is here, and I have since seen the show twice with at least two more shows on the near horizon, including Andy and Betsy's last performance Feb. 10th. This show is a highlight of the 2012-2013 Broadway Season for sure!!

The show, production wise, is near perfection, and the word FUN, is possibly the best word in the English language to describe this production, this cast, this score and the experience at Roundabout's Studio 54 Theater. In regards to the CD, it is as expected pretty great. The orchestrations are wonderful and the actors are in great voice, though it does seem a bit rushed compared to seeing it live. My only quibble with the album is the fact that every version of "Out on a Limerick" was not included and I'm not entirely sure why? But, regardless everything else is fantastic.

Will Chase is a perfect John Jasper, he is a great villain. Stephanie J. Block's voice soars and her Finale always gives me chills. Andy Karl and Jessie Mueller are superb comic actors with tremendous voices, who do the new additions to the recorded score wonders. Betsy Wolfe is likewise great as Rosa Bud, with the voice of an angel, and the temper of a woman scorned (anyone who has seen the show can attest to that.

I'm old enough to have seen (and loved) the original production back in the 80's! I was so glad they finally got around to reviving it, and happier still that they recorded the C.D. The cast is wonderful . . . just love this recording.
