Not Up to Par,
By Mark Baker (Santa Clarita, CA United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Mystery Off Glen Road (Trixie Belden #5) (Hardcover)
When a fierce storm blows through Sleepyside, it blows a tree into the just completed clubhouse. Now the Bob Whites must figure out some way to get the money to fix it before winter comes and ruins everything inside. When Brian donates the money he had been saving to buy Mr. Lytell's car, Trixie and Honey work overtime to come up with some way to repay him. They hit upon the idea of patrolling the Wheeler's game preserve. But when Trixie begins to suspect that a poacher is on the loose, the girls may have more then they can handle.First, let me say that I absolutely love this series. I've been reading it for over 15 years. But I have never liked this book. The plot just moves too slowly for this action oriented guy. Plus, I've never found the story believable, even when I read it as a kid. Many fans love this book because of the great character interactions. I will certainly grant that there are some wonderful character moments, and if that's what I'm in the mode for, I certainly check this book out. It's not my first choice when it comes time to reread a Trixie, however. If you like Trixie, you'll want to read this book and form your own opinion. However, if you are new to this wonderful girl detective, start with the first four. They are much better books to get you as addicted as I am to Trixie and her friends.

My Favorite Trixie Belden Book,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Mystery Off Glen Road (Trixie Belden #5) (Hardcover)
Of all the Trixie Belden books I have read, this one has to be my favorite. I read it out loud to 4 year old sister and my mom, and they both enjoyed it as well. It is a very complicated book, but I could still grasp it, as could they. The Bob-Whites clubhouse has been damaged in a big hurricane. Trixie's eldest brother, Brian, wants to buy the materials to fix it up again with the money he earned to buy a jalopy. The others all say that they will earn the money somehow, and for Brian to buy his car. But he insists on paying for the materials. Trixie has an idea though, which she tells only to her best friend, Honey Wheeler. She will give her diamond ring which Honey's adopted brother Jim Frayne gave her. The only problem is that the ring is still in the bank. She must convince her parents that she has a good reason for wanting to wear it. So she pretend to be in love with Honey's cousin, Ben Riker who is visiting for the Thanksgiving holidays. Her father takes the ring out of the bank for her and she gives it to the man who ownes the jalopy as security until they can earn enough money. To be able to buy the car from the man they get jobs as gamekeepers. But while they are out patrolling in the forest they find a dead deer, strange footprints, and one wheeled bike tracks. Is a poacher lurking around in those woods? They will find out soon enough!

substandard and rather embarrassing,

This review is from: The Mystery Off Glen Road (Trixie Belden #5) (Hardcover)
I could hardly wait for this muddled tale to end. Julie Campbell Tatham, writing as "Julie Campbell," wrote the first six books of the series, and this, the fifth, stumbles. The scenes where Trixie tries to convince her family and friends that she's "in love" to achieve a noble secret agenda, were embarrassing and unnecessary -- she could have achieved the same end by confiding in her parents straightforwardly. And the "mystery" turns out to be a disappointing non-mystery. I recommend this particular Trixie Belden book mainly to continuity fans who want to know every detail of the development of the Bob-Whites of the Glen club; otherwise, skip to the Mystery in Arizona for a believable and entertaining (rather than ridiculous) story.Even so, I'm delighted that this series is back in print!! This edition features Mary Stevens' darling illustrations from the 1950s. (There are Trixie Belden websites on the Internet that talk about the various editions and illustrators.) The new editions tend to go out of print fairly quickly, so don't assume they'll always be around!

A Bit Contrived,
By
This review is from: The Mystery Off Glen Road (Trixie Belden #5) (Hardcover)
I read this when I was a tween, and although I enjoyed it, I felt that parts of it were contrived, though I didn't necessarily know the word "contrived" back then. What I felt was, "This doesn't make sense: why doesn't Trixie just tell her parents?" The first three books in the Trixie Belden series are by far the best.

The Trixie Belden Series is evocative of another time yet so addictive it brings one into the present with a feeling "that everything will be alright" - just perfect reading for any age.

I love the sweetness of Trixie and Honey as they get into "scrapes" together. All the Trixie Belden books are very entertaining, and I am happy to recapture some of my youth.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Mystery Off Glen Road (Trixie Belden #5) (Hardcover)
I'm convinced. Jim and Trixie will someday fall in love and marry! Why else would she have that diamond ring. *wink* Speaking of diamonds, this series shines with the richness of yesterday and the feel of tomorrow. Julie Campbell created wonderful characters and these books are wonderful for rainy days or trips to the beach. With Trixie, you can always count on mystery and much more.

Trixie Belden Mystery off Glen Road,
By Julie Campbell "S.F." (Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Mystery Off Glen Road (Trixie Belden #5) (Hardcover)
The book was ok, but it wasn't the best that I have read before. I didn't like how they didn't have a really good plot and they didn't have a real bad guy. It had some fun in it though. I also didn't like how they made it look like there was a bad guy but in the end it wasn't. This book wasn't the best I have read and I think it deserves 3 stars.
