5.0 out of 5 stars You'll think it's too scary but won't put the book down
This was so terrifying that it seemed to scary to put down, but I'm glad I got through. This should really be the number 1 Nancy Drew. I've read scary books before, but not as scary as this, ever. Totally reccomended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best mystery book, October 2, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Mystery of the Glowing Eye (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 51) (Hardcover)
Im a sucker for mystery books. This is one of the best ones I've read. I love how it makes you wonder after each chapter you read. Then it makes you want to read more. Nancy Drew is trying to find the mystery of the glowing eye and her friend Ned. Her books could have a little more detail in some things, but after all it was a fantastic book. Each chapter got more and more exciting. If you love reading mystery books then this is the one for you!

Though ALL Nancy Drew books are great, I have to admit that this is one of the top ten - it's really suspenseful! You have to read it yourself!

This book was one of the best Nancy Drew books I've ever read. I was scared to death most of the book because I didn't know if someone would be killed or if Nancy would come out alive! You must read this book. Wonderful!! Garenteed!!!!

Nancy thinks her biggest worry is sharing her father's attention with his attractive new research-assistant Marty King, to whom her father has divulged information on a possible case, when a bigger problem literally lands in her back garden. A pilot-less helicopter descends in her garden, with nothing and nobody aboard except an envelope addressed to Nancy herself. Inside is a letter signed from her boyfriend Ned Nickerson that reads: "Beware of Cyclops. Ned."

A quick check confirms that Ned has been missing from his fraternity house for several days, and Nancy instantly fears that he's been kidnapped. Joined by Ned's (fairly interchangeable) roommates Burt and Dave, Nancy and her friends George and Bess begin an investigation into Ned's disappearance. But when the helicopter lifts off from Nancy's garden that night, it takes with it any clues or solid leads on where Ned might be.

Nancy begins to suspect that the note about "Cyclops" may have something to do with the mystery that her father has been alluding to, one that leads her to the Anderson Museum in Hager where there have been rumors of university students performing experiments that involve a large, glowing eye. After a few excursions into a nearby swamp, several rides in various helicopters, a hunt around Emerson University, and a rather eventful night in the museum, Nancy suspects that a mysterious red-headed man is behind Ned's disappearance.

This is a decent Nancy Drew mystery, although certainly not the best. The pace is swift and the ideas concerning electromagnetism, robotic helicopters and paralyzing beams of light are certainly fun, and the entire premise is given a degree of personal involvement considering it is Ned whose life seems to be in danger.

There are some annoying elements though: the fact that Carson Drew withholds information about the glowing eye for no discernable reason, the completely superfluous subplot about Marty King, and the fact that everyone is remarkably calm about the fact that Ned has been kidnapped - but then, this is Nancy Drew! She runs rings around the police, is always at the right place at the right time, and solves the case without breaking a sweat.

The ending is a tad anti-climactic, but all in all, it's a fun, frivolous read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best one in the whole series!, October 4, 2005
By
This review is from: The Mystery of the Glowing Eye (Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, No 51) (Hardcover)
I received this book for Christmas in 1996. That was almost 10 years ago! The other day I read it again and still gave me a little chill to read it. It was my favorite book in the entire 56 book series. My second favorite one was #25 The Ghost of Blackwood Hall. The book's chapters flow nicely together and there is never a dull moment in the entire story. The basis of the book is Nancy's boyfriend Ned Nickerson is kidnapped and Nancy is determined to find him and find out who Cyclops is what they have to do with Ned or if they have anything to do with Ned's disappearance. This book is a definte must read!
