From Booklist

Gr. 2^-4. Cousins Titus, Timothy, and Sarah-Jane make up the Three Cousins Detective Club. In this seventh series title about their adventures, they go on an excursion with Sarah-Jane's father to look at a lighthouse that a friend of his would like to buy and restore. The lighthouse shows signs of vandalism, and immediately the three kids take up their detective roles and start scouting for clues. Sarah-Jane exclaims, rather flippantly, that at least the lighthouse isn't haunted, but unknown to her, her comment is overheard. Later the kids are indeed "haunted" at the lighthouse by none other than the eavesdropper, a boy who had been a close friend of the lighthouse's late owner. Because it is a special place for the boy, he is using every possible tactic to deter prospective buyers. The story is told in lively, natural dialogue, and the author's enthusiasm for lighthouses and their lore makes it delightful reading. Shelley Townsend-Hudson

About the Author

Elspeth Campbell Murphy is often asked about her first name. It is a Scottish form of Elizabeth, and is pronounced just like it's spelled, with the accent on the El.

Elspeth was born in Hamilton, Scotland, near Glasgow. She moved with her parents to Canada were she spent her early years. But most of Elspeth's life has been spent near Lake Michigan.

Elspeth received her Master of Arts in Teaching from Oakland University, a B.A. in English at Trinity College, Illinois; and General Bible at Moody Bible Institute. She has taught in the elementary grades; and written and edited curriculum. She now writes full- time. She is a member of the Authors Guild.

Elspeth has been a familiar name in Christian publishing for over 15 years, with more than seventy-five books to her credit and sales reaching five million worldwide. She is the author of the bestselling series David and I Talk to God and The Kids From Apple Street Church, as well as the l990 Gold Medallion winner Do You Se Me, God?

Elspeth loves to write. Most of her work has been for young children, from babies through about fifth graders. She's particularly interested in writing "first chapter books" for kids in the middle grades who are beyond picture books and easy-to-reads, but not quite ready to tackle longer novels. Mysteries were Elspeth's favorite kind of book when she was a kid herself, and they still are. She says it's fun to try to figure things out. In fact, planning and writing a book as a little like solving a mystery-getting a little bit of information here, a little bit there, and putting it all together.

Elspeth enjoys every minute she spends with the three detective-cousins, Timothy, Titus, and Sarah-Jane featured in her series THE THREE COUSINS DETECTIVE CLUB.

Elspeth and her husband, Michael, live in Illinois. From her home-office window, Elspeth can see a school on one side and a zoo on the other. She says it's fun to go to sleep at night, hearing the roar of the lions over the roar of the buses.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Mystery of the Haunted Lighthouse, April 3, 2009
This review is from: The Mystery of the Haunted Lighthouse (Three Cousins Detective Club) (Book 7) (Paperback)
Ten-year-old cousins Sarah-Jane Cooper, Timothy Dawson and Titus McKay call themselves the Three Cousins Detective Club. When a friend of Mr. Cooper's decides he wants to purchase and restore a decommissioned lighthouse, the cousins are excited to see it. Sarah-Jane has a very active imagination and is a little worried that the lighthouse might be scary. What if it's haunted?

When they arrive and find that the lighthouse has been vandalized, the Three Cousins Detectives Club start searching for clues. Sarah-Jane is relieved that the lighthouse doesn't seem too scary until she sees a haunting image in the lighthouse tower. The "ghost" turns out to be a teenage boy who was close friends with the last lighthouse keeper. The lighthouse is a very special place for him; he often comes there to remember his friend, the now-deceased lighthouse keeper. He's been trying to scare off potential buyers so he can continue to visit the lighthouse.

This book is part of an excellent Christian fiction series for children. Each book has a theme based on Biblical principles. The Mystery of the Haunted Lighthouse's theme is faithfulness. Spooky but not scary, this is an entertaining read.
