Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-- An amusement park is the setting for this addition to a popular series. After spending time on the various rides, Cam, her Aunt Katie, Uncle George, and friend Eric decide to eat at the snack bar. That's when Aunt Katie notices that her wallet is missing, and the mystery unfolds. With the help of her photographic memory, Cam begins to gather and eliminate clues; before long, the guilty party is rounded up (at the haunted house, of course). The story flows logically and convincingly from problem to solution, with a few twists that add just the right amount of suspense for this audience. Cam is once again portrayed as a strong character, making this another worthy transitional chapter book. The format is open and inviting, and humorous black-and-white drawings appear on every other page. --Cheryl Cufari, N.A. Walbran Elementary School, Oriskany, NY

More About the Author

I write both fiction and non-fiction. I begin my fiction with the main character. The story comes later. Of course, since I'll be spending a lot of time with each main character, why not have him or her be someone I like? Andy Russell is based, loosely, on a beloved member of my family. He's fun to write about and the boy who inspired the character is even more fun to know. Cam Jansen is based even more loosely on a classmate of mine in the first grade whom we all envied because we thought he had a photographic memory. Now, especially when my children remind me of some promise they said I made, I really envy Cam's amazing memory. I have really enjoyed writing about Cam Jansen and her many adventures. For my books of non-fiction I write about subjects I find fascinating. My first biography was Our Golda: The Life of Golda Meir. To research that book, I bought a 1905 set of encyclopedia. Those books told me what each of the places Golda Meir lived in were like when she lived there. I've written many other biographies, including books about Martin Luther King, Jr; George Washington; Abraham Lincoln; Helen Keller; Harriet Tubman; Anne Frank; and many others in my Picture Book Biography series. I've been a Yankee and a Lou Gehrig fan for decades so I wrote Lou Gehrig: The Luckiest Man. It's more the story of his great courage than his baseball playing. Children face all sorts of challenges and it's my hope that some will be inspired by the courage of Lou Gehrig. I am working now on another book about a courageous man, Janusz Korczak. My book One Yellow Daffodil is fiction, too, but it's based on scores of interviews I did with Holocaust survivors for my books We Remember the Holocaust, Child of the Warsaw Ghetto, The Number on My Grandfather's Arm, and Hiding from the Nazis. The stories I heard were compelling. One Yellow Daffodil is both a look to the past and to the future, and expresses my belief in the great spirit and strength of our children. I love math and was a math teacher for many years, so it was fun for me to write several math books including Fraction Fun, Calculator Riddles, and Shape Up! Fun with Triangles and Other Polygons. In my office I have this sign, "Don't Think. Just Write!" and that's how I work. I try not to worry about each word, even each sentence or paragraph. For me stories evolve. Writing is a process. I rewrite each sentence, each manuscript, many times. And I work with my editors. I look forward to their suggestions, their help in the almost endless rewrite process. Well, it's time to get back to dreaming, and to writing, my dream of a job. David A. Adler is the author of more than 175 children's books, including the Young Cam Jansen series. He lives in Woodmere, New York.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cam Jansen and the Mystery at the Haunted House, May 7, 2002
A Kid's Review
This story is about a girl named Cam, her friend, her aunt, and her uncle. Cam's aunt's wallet gets stolen. My favorite part is when they went into the big, scary haunted house. My favorite character is Cam because she says "Click" to help her remember something important. Kids who know how to read will love this story. Read to find out how they solve the mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars One My Favorate Cam Jansen Books, January 10, 2001
A Kid's Review
This must be the best Cam Jansen book David A. Adler ever wrote! At least, it's MY favorite and I have read most of them. One of my favorite parts is when Uncle George calls "Rudie". It is fun to read. So, if this book is out of stock before you get one, try to get one at the library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cam Jansen and the mystery of the haunted house, June 14, 2007
A Kid's Review
Have you ever wannted to read an interesting book? Well now is your chance to raed the book I read because it is very teriffic. Thw book I read is "Cam Jansen and and the mystery of the haunted house".The book is about how Cam jansen was trying to figure out what has happened to her grandma's wallet because it is missing. This book is talking about something very mysterious that only Cam Jansen could help solve with her amazing photographic memory. She remembers everything she sees with just one work and it is "click" when she wants to remember something she just says this word. She tries her best to try to solve this mystery about the wallet and she needs some back up so that she could find what her grandma is really missing because it is really important. Cam jansen is a really smart girl that loves to help other people out and she has a photographic memory and with just the word "click she remembers many unusual things like what happened in the fair. The fair is where Cam Jansen, Eric, Grams, and Gramps. The fair was really important in the book because everything that jwsa very Mysterious happened in the fair. Cam Jansen tries her best but she still smells something very cheesy.

I like this book because it is mysterious. It was an easy book, but it was a page turner. I garantee you that if you read this book your head will be blown off. I also like this book because the characters are stupendous. The one bad thing is that there are not many cliff hangers. The other bad thing is that they really do not know how to act. If you like cool and interesting books, that are page turners, this is a book for you. The author of the book is David adler and he is a very good author I tell you that. Hopefully you get this book because it is really good.
