Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7. This series revolves around the adventures of Sally Lorimer and her best friend, Thalia Nesbit, two 11-year-old equine enthusiasts. Sally's family lives in Kestrel Manor, an idyllic house in the British countryside; Thalia lives nearby and keeps her pony with Sally's at the Manor. Mystery Horse deals with the hard lesson of letting go of an animal that belongs to someone else after developing an attachment to it. In Show Jumper Wanted, Sally confronts her fear of the show ring, while Thalia's over-reaction to a visit from her absentee father has life-threatening consequences. "Horseshoes" avoids most of the shallow, over-dramatic plot development and superficial description typical of children's paperback series and is vastly superior to "Saddle Club" (Bantam) and "Pony Pals" (Scholastic). The writing is also well above the norm for series fiction. While a limited amount of horse lingo might confuse unfamiliar readers, the overall themes are not strictly equine and will appeal to a more general audience. A real winner of a series appropriate for the horse-crazy crowd.?Christina Linz, Macon Technical Institute Library, GA
