Book Description

11 and up6 and upThe Mystery Library
The story of Atlantis, the so-called lost continent, has intrigued people of all walks of life ever since the Greek philosopher Plato wrote about in the fourth century B.C. This volume begins with Plato's original telling of the legend, then explains how early modern scholars rediscovered it and considers the many places around the world that have been proposed as the site of Atlantis. Finally, the book presents a detailed examination of the most widely accepted theory -- that the legend was based on the destruction of the Greek island of Thera by the largest natural catastrophe in recorded history. Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-Nardo explores this mysterious civilization through the writings of ancient and modern authors, touching upon the various theories about this lost world. He begins with Plato's detailed descriptions in the dialogues, discussing the land, cities, people, and government. Although most Greek writers believed that Atlantis was a figment of Plato's imagination, the Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus and the Greek philosopher Proclus accepted its existence. The works of modern researchers, such as Ignatius Donnelly are also included. Nardo presents a full accounting of the many disputed locations of the continent, which, in addition to the Atlantic Ocean, include Morocco, Tunisia, Europe, Malta, Iran, and Arabia. Although the mystery may never be solved, the story of Atlantis will continue to be a source of fascination. The author uses many quotes and sidebars, and definitions of unfamiliar words are provided in the narrative. Average-quality, black-and-white photographs, reproductions, and maps appear throughout.-Lana Miles, Duchesne Academy, Houston, TX

Review

"A concise overview filled with black-and-white photographs of sites and artwork from around the world."
-- School Library Journal (July 2001) (School Library Journal 20020701)

"Although the list of topics for this series may be nebulous, the treatment is serious and steeped in solid research. This work would be suitable for a research topic or appealing to reluctant readers. There are frequent appearances of b&w photographs. Works consulted. Index. Further reading section. Recommended."
-- The Book Report (September-October 2002) (Book Report 20010501)

"The index is finely detailed, and halftones and simple diagrams clarify textual descriptions. A good choice for students who seek a volume that does not have the appearance of a picture book."
-- School Library Journal (July 2002) (School Library Journal 20040401)

"A research-oriented overview...offers the latest opinions in addition to early research results. The annotated list for further reading contains well-chosen titles, the earliest of which was published in 1995, and the compilation of works consulted offers a wide variety of opinions. This is an excellent, up-to-date supplement to older and more sensational accounts."
