4.0 out of 5 stars Dedicated to the Nishi-naka children and all Japanese American boys and girls, May 16, 2008
From Flap:

In downtown Los Angeles there is an intriguing Japanese area known as Little Tokyo. It is here, in their grandparents' apartment above their gift shop, the Far East Trading Company, that Danny and Carol Nomura are spending a two week vacation. The annual Nikei Festival is soon to take place and Danny is to march in the parade with the Scouts, carrying a rare antique samurai sword.

But a week before the parade, a shifty-eyed stranger named Mr. Kaji appears at the Far East Trading Company and announces that he has been sent by the Japanese government to recover all antique samurai swords. Grandpa Nomura is reluctant to sell the sword that Danny is to carry, but Mr. Kaji is very persuasive.

Suddenly Danny becomes aware of a number of strange happenings - a hole in the backyard wall, an undue amount of ice in the fish pond, Mr. Kaji's suspicious reaction to a gold cigarette butt. Aided by their friend Archie, a policeman, Carol and Danny set out to discover just what it all means.

All the kaleidoscopeic wonder of Little Tokyo is here, mirrored in exquisite detailed drawings by Kazue Mizumura. With fine touches of humor and the sure knowledge of contemporary children, Frank Bonham has created a tightly-knit mystery that his young readers will thouroughly enjoy unraveling.
