Your best friend Tom has been in Mexico for a short trip, working on a TV report on the ancient Mayan civilization. Three days ago, he vanished without a trace. The only clues you have are terrible, haunting nightmares where Tom is killed in a Mayan sacrificial ceremony. You must find him before these nightmares become reality! Can you even trust your own dreams? Maybe someone is telepathically leading you off course so you'll never reach your friend in time! What should you do next?

Editorial Reviews

Review

Choose Your Own Adventure titles have sold at least 250 million copies around the world since the series debuted with Bantam Books in 1978, and anyone who remembers reading them probably knows why. You were the protagonist. When you're 9 years old, that's a pretty exhilarating feeling. Your fate depended on the choices you made at the bottom of each page. Each installment had dozens of endings, and the more rabid fans (including yours truly) wanted to experience every one. --The Associated Press --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

More About the Author

R.A. Montgomery is an avid adventurer, first and foremost. Whether in the mountains, or on the sea, or in explorations of the mind, he has found adventure in every aspect of his life. Teaching school, working in the administration of a top university, hiking in the Himalayas, or working in the Peace Corps in Africa, Montgomery has taken making choices seriously. Montgomery says, "There is never a day in which you are not confronted with choice. Some seemingly small choices can determine the path of the rest of your life. CYOA gave me a vehicle for examining all the impacts of choice."

He was born in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1936. One of his first memories is sitting in his high chair and being frightened of Jell-O, which he thought was alive. He attended Hopkins Grammar School, the oldest private school in the country (founded in 1660), and Williston Academy. He got his college degree from Williams in 1958, and did graduate school at Yale and NYU.

Choose Your Own Adventure® books reflect his diverse interests and values. Montgomery states, "More than anything else, everyone should have the freedom to express themselves. Second to that, everyone should take risks and be willing to fail. Picking yourself up off the mat is the central business of life."

Today R.A. Montgomery lives in north central Vermont, where he is CEO of the small publishing house that has re-introduced the CYOA series. He travels frequently to Asia and Europe. Although his technical climbing days are kaput.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mysterious and Interesting, January 8, 2007
I would reccomend this entire series, and especially this book. The cover really jumped out at me. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. Any young reader would enjoy this book. You travel back to the time of the Mayans to find your friend Tom. You end up with a whole lot more on your hands than just your friend's disappearance. You run into aliens, Mayans, and a whole bunch of adventure. You might end up in jail, you might find your friend Tom, or you could even travel to outer space. This book won't leave you disappointed. Each turn of the page and decision adds a new level to the mystery. You have to deal with the tradition of human sacrifice with the Mayans, as well as dangerous strangers. Watch out and you just might make it out alive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kindle Version, November 13, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I sent the sample to my kindle but the sample only contains the cover and the table of contents - no actual content. I have a kindle 2, and the product page says it is optimized for the DX so I was worried there will be problems - that's why I wanted to try a sample. I decided to go ahead and buy it because unlike something like a comic book, I saw no reason why screen size would matter. Also, Amazon is good about refunding ebooks if there is a significant problem with them.

I just started reading this book and it seems to work just fine on the smaller kindles - in fact I'm not sure why they said optimized for the DX. There are illustrations, which is nice - not many of my kindle books have illustrations - but those display just fine on the smaller kindles.

One note for the author or whoever edits them for the kindle - the directions at the beginning say that if you change your mind, press previous page to go back and make a different choice. But that's not correct - you want to press "back".

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun for Reluctant Readers, September 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Mystery of the Maya gives readers an exciting glimpse of ancient Mayan society and a thrillingly unconventional journey through the pages of a book. As in all Choose Your Own Adventure books, the reader must frequently decide between various plot alternatives, flipping through the pages of the book to follow one particular storyline or another. Told in the second person, Choose Your Own Adventures permit "you," the reader, to face death, arrest or untold glory in a way that makes reading unexpected and very entertaining. This book is great fun for reluctant readers, who will enjoy the adventures in time travel, human sacrifice, warrior initiation and great financial success.
