Book Description

With Monster Hunters, Nancy Garden created a delightful series that allows readers to solve mysteries related to unnatural phenomena. In the second thriller, Brian encounters a new monster--the Monster Hunters conclude that it's a werewolf--but readers won't know until the full moon which of the three suspects is the "midnight menace."

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5 The dead pigeon on the sidewalk could have died of natural causesor it could have been killed by wolves which escaped from the Central Park Zoo. The wolves are recaptured, but animal killings continue, and escalate in severity. Brian begins to suspect werewolvesbut who? Ralph, a new boy in school, is awfully hairy and produces chilling growls as a dog in the school play. Mareck is a sinister teenager with pointed teeth. Brian and his friends eventually solve the mystery in this second ``Monster Hunters'' adventure, and most readers will be several chapters ahead of them. The action drags on tediously. Only those who can accept werewolves on Central Park West or are particularly interested in the New York City setting are likely to persist to the end. Overall, this is a disappointing entry from a usually first-rate writer. Li Stark, North Castle Public Library, Armonk, N.Y.

3.0 out of 5 stars Monster In the NIght, February 14, 2003

This review is from: Mystery of the Midnight Menace (Monster Hunters, No. 2) (Paperback)
When a bird's massacred body is found outside Brian's New York apartment complex he thinks there's a logical explanation for it. But when more birds turn up only as skeletons, and strange sounds keep him and his family awake at night Brian gets suspicious. Recently on the news there have been reports of people being attacked by giant dogs. So, Brain, Darcy, and Numbles decide to reopen the Monster Hunter Detective to find out who the Midnight Menace is!
I think this was a good book and had incredible details. The ending was okay; the author solved the problem too fast and then sped up and ended the book quickly. Nancy Garden has a series of books titled Monster Hunters they are about three kids, (Brain, Darcy, and Numbles), who try to find a logical explanation for strange things that happen and stop the monsters at hand. Overall, I think that she is a good writer and this was a well-written book.
