Book Description

0750301783 978-0750301787 January 3, 1994 2
Quantum mechanics stands as one of the most remarkable achievements of the 20th century, providing startling insight into the nature of matter and a spectacularly successful predictive theory. However, while the predictive ability of the quantum theory has been rigorously tested time and again, so that it now satisfies any criterion of reliability as a tool of scientific inquiry, fundamental difficulties remain with its interpretation.

The Mystery of the Quantum World, Second Edition introduces the philosophical issues raised by the success of the quantum theory and lucidly outlines the different points of view adopted by various physicists striving to understand the meaning underlying the theories used every day. The author encourages you to see how the most successful of physical theories is relevant to issues outside physics. Revised and expanded, this edition includes a new chapter that introduces the most important of the recent developments in quantum theory. The authoritative selection of topics ensures that readers already familiar with the first edition of the book will extend their knowledge of quantum theory, and those with no previous knowledge acquire an insight into this fascinating world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A non technical presentation of quantum physics., January 5, 2001
By
Sumimus "sumimus" (Pacific Grove, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Mystery of the Quantum World (Paperback)
Although non technical in its presentation, it contains precise presentation of the implications of quantum mechanics. The author has taken great care not to lose its reader in technical jargon or mathematics. On the other hand, the reader can still understand with precision the origin of the puzzling nature of quantum physics. It will appeal to someone interested in understanding quantum physics for its philosophical implications. Clearly written and enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intuitive &Thoughtful Discussion of Quantum Theory Bases, September 14, 2005
By
Don "Don" (Redondo Beach, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Mystery of the Quantum World (Paperback)
Rational, clear description of Quantum Theory concepts and their philosophical implications. Contains intuitive introduction to QT fundamentals. An excellent tonic for those books/articles written to sensationalize and make unwarranted philosophical claims based on QT. Author is an applied math professor with greater-than 100 articles on elementary particles. Presents the philosophical problems created by QT and the (respectable) alternative explanations. After describing the alternatives, the author makes some excellent arguments for realism, which some QT pioneers suggested should be abandoned.

4.0 out of 5 stars Understandable, clear and concise, March 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was looking for a clear treatment of the basic principles of Quantum Physics meant for the general public, since my personal culture does not allow me to understand the mathematics at the basis of the theory. I found this volume easy to follow, well written, concise and to the point. Equations have been set apart for those able to grasp them and do not impinge the core of the discussion.

Sometimes I have found the language a bit obscure and I had to revert to other books for a clearer understanding but, overall, the subject has been presented in an entertaining and informative manner.
