I saw this about a half century ago and I still remember it. It gave me many a chill as an eight-year-old.

This film has everything a film needs to be great:

1. Crazy professors.
2. Radioactive clouds.
3. An observatory with steel doors.
4. Some fair semi-noir acting.
5. Funny commentary.
6. Giant alien tentacled eye balls in the mist that eat people.

Ah yes, this is one to savor. Really, it is. Try it and you'll see.

Some bad movies are so bad they are funny; most bad movies, however, are simply bad, and in order to be funny they need a little help. Debuting on television in 1988 and running for eleven years, MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 did precisely that. The premise was wacky. An average Joe type guy is trapped on a wayward satelite by a mad scientist who is convinced he can dominate the world through bad movies. Each episode included several broad-farce sketches between the guy, his robot pals, and the mad scientist--but the big thing was the movie, watched by our hapless victim and robots Tom Servo and Crow. The film on this occasion is THE CRAWLING EYE, and it is hard to believe that England originally rated this film for audiences aged sixteen and older; there's nothing in it that would frighten a six year old.

Released in 1958, THE CRAWLING EYE has also been known as THE TROLLENBERG TERROR, THE CREEPING EYE, THE FLYING EYE, and CREATURE FROM ANOTHER WORLD. The story is a bit convoluted. Essentially, Alan (Forrest Tucker) is working for the U.N. when he receives a summons from old friend Professor Crevett (Warren Mitchell, with a really bad German accent) to come to Trollenberg, where a peculiar cloud with radioactive properties has settled on the mountain. Could this be just like that other horrible thing they experienced in the Andes Mountains some time ago? They hope not, but psychic Anne (Janet Munro) seems to be tapping into something strange, and pretty soon heads roll, dead men walk, and the entire village has to flee before an alien invasion.

Unlike many MST3K ventures THE CRAWLING EYE isn't actually bad.

In this early (1989) Joel episode, MST3K takes on THE CRAWLING EYE. Giant, bulbous space-eyeballs w/ tentacles attack! Can Forrest Tucker save humanity? I actually like the movie on its own, but still love the jokes at its expense. It's obvious that the show is still evolving and "finding itself" at this stage. It's fun and interesting to watch the characters / personalities develop, along w/ the dialog and skits. A must for the MST3K fanatic!...

When I was a kid and saw The Crawling Eye at the movies, it was really scary until I saw the eye. I couldn't resist the MST3K version and I wasn't disappointed.

There's so much in the movie at which to poke fun and the guys take full advantage. Still, in the beginning, the movie manages to instill that creepy feeling that I felt all those years ago.

MST3000 makes this a fun cult movie. The streaming was terrible. Too many starts and stops. Could not watch it full screen.

A big fan of MST3K, I find that there still must be some redeeming value to the movie in order to make it worth watching. The MST3K guys are always funny, but some movies are either so slow, or so bad that not even their commentary can save it. This is not one of those movies. I'm also a fan of old B&W science fiction, and this movie would stand on it's own as campy fun! Far from a classic, this movie still has reasonable acting and pace. The story was actually interesting, with some originality. Compared to some of the other movies in this series, this one is head and shoulders above. A good one to try as your introduction to MST3K, so long as you like old B&W sci fi.

An early MST3K, this movie must be before the crew found the right formula since it fails to reach the same level of hilarity you see in most of the films they do the patter over. It's not for lack of material... eye creatures from space attack a Swiss village. It turns out they are vulnerable to Molotov cocktails and bombs but, hey, what isn't?
