Good way to kill two hours.
Bad Mo Fo
The jokes were ok, the movie in the background really stunk, but that is the whole idea.

It is a very serious horror movie and is actually a little creepy.

There are some pretty dark elements to this film that make perfect riffing material. B-rate horror at its finest makes for some good jokes.

As MST3k is sort of a show within a show within a movie concept, I think it is better to look at the individual parts of the episode as a good or bad part can make or ruin the entire episode.

The Movie: No this is not the classic horror movie "Devil Doll" that TCM plays every year around Halloween (nor is it the brilliantly written master / puppet segment (with a dummy named Hugo) that appears in another horror movie). No this is an average 1960's horror movie about a mysterious hypnotist and his even stranger dummy Hugo, who seems to have a will of his own. An American reporter and his rich girlfriend are slowly pulled into the hypnotist's evil game. While I wouldn't call this movie a classic, it is by far one of the better made movies shown on MST3k. It is a very serious horror movie and is actually a little creepy.

Riffs: Mike and the bots do provide a lot of good riffs. The riffing was sometimes sparse but then again this movie did not have too many elements that would lead to quick and easy riffs.

Host Segments: The ones involving the SOL crew were hilarious! I won't spoil any of the jokes but a character from a previous show makes an appearance. As far as the mads, this is when they were in Ancient Rome. Their segments are mildly amusing.

Overall: Take a well made horror film, thrown in some very funny segments, and add some good riffing - and you have a very good MST3k segment. This one is not a top 10 (or 20) episode but it was a nice change of pace to see the guys riff on a non-cheesy and non-campy film.

Other: Be sure to watch the crew silhouette when they watch the movie. Nice little touch by the show!

dear Amazon,
I could not help but notice that half of the once 'free with amazon prime' episodes of Mystery science theater 3000 have now become 2.99 rentals or 9.99 to buy.
I also have noted that the remaining half are set to have their 'free with amazon prime' status expire in 10 days.
MST 3K has been the only glue holding me to my Amazon Prime membership.
Don't get me wrong, the price is not bad in and of itself; however, the selection of movies is very poor; and with the recent change in the 2 day shipping ( now I have to spend a bare minimum before I get a service we had both agreed upon previously?! ), I have been seriously contemplating my termination of Amazon Prime.
If MST3K goes, then so do I. Other than Mystery science theater 3000, Netflix has the exact same movies and TV shows. I was with Netflix way before Amazon Prime and fail to see the point in paying 2 different companies for the same content; and I can wait a few extra days to get my 25 dollar or more purchases shipped to me by just using the free standard shipping.
sincerely,
a viewer

DEVIL DOLL is the strange tale of a hypnotist named Vorelli, who also happens to be a ventriloquist. Horror occurs when his dummy does things that it could only do if it happened to be... Alive! Mike, Tom Servo, and Crow are at their best, drawing and quartering this lump of moldy limburger. The jokes are on target, and the skits, mostly involving "soul transference", are quite humorous. Another classic Mike episode...

Hugo is an interesting character who puts Houdini to shame exiting his crate. The movie could have been good, if not for all of the close-ups (over and over... and over) of people staring blankly at something. It made the movie a bit... slow. Therefore, there is not a constant stream of riffs, but some of the ones they do have are classics. Be careful with your souls, because good definitely dies in this film. Enjoy!

This is without a doubt one of the creepier and bizarre movies Mike and the Bots have heckled, and it makes for a hilarious experience. The host segments are also great, featuring Crow as the demented ventriloquist with Mike as his (unwilling) puppet who must listen as Crow softly recites the main character's odd catchphrase about ham. Do dummies care that they can't have ham? I have no idea, but hearing that line over and over had me and my girlfriend in stitches.

Damn funny stuff. Bizarre, goofy. And features the most unappealing ventriloquist of all time. As with many of their shows the guys at mst3k make comedic gold from rubbish.

I'm surprised Mike and the bots weren't broken by the time they left the theater after this insane little movie ended. This episode is one of my favorites from the ScyFy era. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves MST3K. I cut my teeth on the ScyFy era episodes as a kid of around 14 or so when season 8 was airing in reruns inbetween new s9 shows. Season 8 had a more serialized plot during the host segments, but Mike usually brings you up to speed during the teaser at the beginning of each episode. This episode had fantastic rifs as well as some very memorable host segments. One of my favorite segments of all time is also here, involving a window and a certain "golden spiderduck" attempting to play college boy.

I'll wrap this up quickly. If you like MST3K and haven't seen this one yet, give it a whirl. Yes, the movie would be difficult to sit through without Mike and the bots, but don't worry because they'll be right there until the very last sceen. If they hadn't been along to help me through this mess of a movie, I'd probably be echoing one of the characters bits of dialogue.

"I'll... do anything you say. Get me out of here."

I only wish amazon instant video would make more episodes that have already been released onto DVD available a la carte such as Revenge of The Creature, The Leech Woman, The Mole People, The Deadly Mantis, Mitchell etc. I'd love to own every single MST3K title via instant vid and would gladly shell out $9 every week as long as the selection keeps growing along with the variety of episodes on the DVD volumes. It'd save a tun of shelf space. I've never seen an episode ofMST3K that I haven't loved, including all the ones with Joel as host. Money is a little tight for me right now, which is why I'm thrilled by this a la carte stuff on instant vid. So add more if Shout!factory allows, please amazon. I'll be here with wallet primed to fund these mad experiments.
