One of my all time favorite MST3K's.

Riffs: This episode could have become very average very fast as the movie is too sweet and childlike to provide laughs on its own.

I consider myself a novice MST3K fan - I don't have a real preference for Joel over Mike or Mike over Joel, and I don't think every episode is awesome. Some are way better than others - the snark is good (and the occasionally obscure cultural references are amusing), but I think certain movies just provide better material to joke about than others. I also skip the stuff that happens during the breaks in the movies. I like the robots but don't like the interactions with Pearl, the Grim Reaper-looking guy, and the Planet-of-the-Apes guy. I'm sure it's funny to some, but it's not my cup of tea. The only one I've ever really thought was funny was Lord of the Pants, and I have no recollection of which episode that is.

That being said, Jack Frost is far and away my favorite MST3K episode. I had it on tape somewhere from when I was in college and was hoping to transfer it to my computer so that I could edit out the commercials and burn it to DVD. Unfortunately I lost the tape somewhere, so I figured it was worth the $10 to me to download the movie to burn. Heck, it saves me having to run the tape for two hours while connected to my computer, and then I don't have to go through the trouble of editing out the commercials. Additionally, buying it for $10 beats spending $40 on the DVD set with this movie and three others that I'm not that jazzed about watching.

But back to the movie...

I find that the more compelling the actual movie is, the better the MST3K episode is. I really don't enjoy the episodes where I can't hear the movie or simply can't follow the storyline because it is so badly written. Jack Frost is not one of those. The show's writers have said that they had a real soft spot for this particular movie because it is so sweet and strangely watchable.

This episode is one of the best, and great for the whole family. The movie itself is cheeseball but you aren't bored watching it, and it's odd enough that it is ripe for wise cracks. The story seems to be an old Russian fairytale. My children quote it often, especially the line, "You look like a queen." (Mike Nelson: "In a Freddy Mercury sort of way...")

As MST3k is sort of a show within a show within a movie concept, I think it is better to look at the individual parts of the episode to determine if the episode works as a whole.

The Movie: This is not your typical MST3k movie. This is a children's movie from Russia (including some over-the-top dubbed voices) about two young lovers: strong but vain Ivan and beautiful and wholesome Nastenka. Before these two can be together, they must endure about 10 different fairy tale adventures (some of which are very familiar). There are some really funny and off-the-wall moments but the zany characters will remind you more of movies like "Time Bandits" than Ed Wood.

Riffs: This episode could have become very average very fast as the movie is too sweet and childlike to provide laughs on its own. However Mike and the bots do a great job with a lot of funny riffs from start to finish. As with the later years of MST3k, there is a high and fast riff rate and the crew seemed to really enjoy this film.

Host Segments: The first segment is hilarious if you remember a certain theatrical dance craze of the 90's. The rest are easy to grade: SOL crew - funny as always; Brain Guy / Bobo - mildly amusing at best.

Overall: If you love MST3k because you love to watch and mock bad movies, you will probably be disappointed as this is a decently made kid's fairy tale movie (like the ones they used to play during Saturday afternoons back when there were still independent TV stations). You might laugh with this movie but never at it; the movie is entertaining in a screwy oddball way. The riffing does provide the needed laughs and helps to keep the movie rolling. I would give this one 5 stars if you can get into the movie; 3 stars if you want the normal MST3k cheesefest.

Other: I love when the crew does extra things during the movies. Watch Crow's silhouette during the movie.

I have loved MST3K since the day and hour I first saw it. I loved the Russo-Finnish trilogy, so this is a favorite. When I joined Prime and saw that the episodes were free, I nearly wept with joy. I had the episodes on in the background folding laundry- in fact, that's how I watched all the Gamera episodes. But now they're charging for them! I don't get it! Still, this is a great episode- so perfect for MST3K's sensibility. Pay for it if you must. But I'm still mad.

I think that this is one of the slightly less creepy mst3k episodes and I like it it better than others like say laserblast or manos the hands of fate

One of my all time favorite MST3K's. I made it one of my Christmas traditions even thought it isn't a Christmas story at all. It's "doweling"!
