Witness the story of a young widow who murders her way across the Old West under the cover of the law... seriously. I don't know what's worse: how quick this lady is with a trigger or how blase' everyone else is about it. At her husband's funeral she spots one of the men responsible for her husband's death and shoots him dead on the spot.

Everyone else standing around the grave is like "oh, well, that happened" and the mayor immediately makes her sheriff, at her insistence. Maybe he just didn't want to get shot.

Meanwhile, the Satellite of Love crew learn that whiskey is for breakfast and apparently in the Old West you didn't have inn rooms, you had inn hallways.

The evil "Miss Kitty"-type saloon owner hires a hitman to kill the new woman sheriff. When the hitman wasn't wooing the sheriff, he was paying booty calls on "Miss Kitty". By the end of the movie, most of the town had been shot. The riffs from the crew were pretty good, especially their jokes involving a door that opened the wrong way and people entering one building and exiting across town. I would recommend this one, especially if you like westerns. My only suggestion is that Amazon add closed-captioning to more of these episodes. Sometimes it's hard to understand what is being said.

Joel's next-to-last episode before leaving the show, and MST3K's second western in a row (after THE PAINTED HILLS), GUNSLINGER is Roger Corman's version of Johnny Guitar. The difference is that JOHNNY's director, Nicholas Ray, was an artist who often directed hackwork; Corman was a hack. Thus, while both films are centered on epic duels between two powerful women, one is a sexually ambiguous mashup of the western and the gothic romance, while the other is the very silly story of a love triangle between a cold-blooded lady marshal, the town's saloon keeper/crime boss, and a sentimental hitman in love with them both.

Shot in seven days, an unusually long time for a Corman film, GUNSLINGER is ripe for mockery, but the riffing can't quite overcome the movie's sheer tedium: endless exposition, multiple subplots, murky sound, sets (and editing) that have characters warping time and space, and one-dimensional characters too blank to care about. The SoL crew did the best they could with westerns, but after LAST OF THE WILD HORSES, they never tried another one. Is the genre just inherently unfunny? One wonders.

The movie itself is uneven and not well acted, with the exception of Beverly Garland, but the rifting by Mike and the bots brings it up a few levels. Not the best of the MST3000s but still fun.

I had the tape, but the VHS machine ate it, I was thinking of buying, but couldn't remember how good it was, so I rented it, I still remembered after 20 years "Cue the horses." It's ridiculous. Town started out with 15 people, but only 5 at the end. Not a very good sheriff, lady. She and the gunslinger accounted for 10 of them.
