The Giant Gila Monster is a hilarious episode of MST3K. It's the start of a great run of episode of Season 4. You have to check this one out if you haven't already.

As MST3k is sort of a show within a show within a movie concept, I think it is better to look at the individual parts of the episode in order to properly grade.

The Movie: A giant Gila monster attacks and ruins the lives of Chase (the hero whose French girlfriend might become a ward of the state in some backwards US town (huh?)); the police chief (who never collects evidence and whose jurisdiction must be a 1 x 1 block area); and "The Gang" (fun lovin' kids from the 50's who love their hotrods and that new fangled rock and roll). The special effects are exactly what you would expect (someone's pet Gila monster walking over Hot Wheels). The problem with this mediocre movie is that we never get to see the Gila monster (who should the real star of this movie) actually attack anything until the movie is about half way over. Instead the first half of the movie tries to cram in about 20 different subplots that really go nowhere.

Host Segments: Average segments at first. Things pick up when the bots ruin Joel's segment and then Joel ruins Tom's "Servo on Cinema". Note: Pay attention to the letter reading segment where a young reader makes an error when naming people. This error is later used by other characters (Wikipedia it to get the full story once you are done watching.)

Riffs: I was really worried about this movie as, except for the blocking jokes, the riffs were few and not really funny. But (just like the movie) the second half really picked up. Starting with the scene where Chase sings to his sister, the riffs start coming fast and funny.

Overall: This is one of those rare episodes where the riffing actually improves as the movie moves along. If you can make it to the halfway mark, this is actually a really good episode.

This was a good pick for the MST crew .... consider the "leg up" gag throughout the movie very funny

This is one of those movies that you and I as kids could have made way back then! There are some good running gags like "The Leg Up" and those "Right Angle Skid Marks", but the movie action is really slow in general! The Gila Monster just wanders around most of the time and then bumps into people at the very end! But some funny lines and good references throughout. SPOILER: Check out how carefully they handle the "nitro" at the end! (Of course no explanation as to how they got it!)
