As MST3k is sort of a show within a show within a movie concept, I think it is better to look at the individual parts of the episode in order to properly grade.

The Movie: Behold a Robot fighting an Aztec Mummy in an epic battle!! Sounds great except for two big problems: 1) the epic battle ends up being two guys in costumes basically shuffling into each other and 2) the battle doesn't start until the last 5 minutes of the movie. So what happens, you ask, during the first 60 or so minutes of the movie? We are treated to a professor narrating his story to other professors about how five years earlier yet another professor kidnapped his wife and planned to steal the Aztec Mummy's treasures. (Fortunately the MST3k crew gives each professor a memorable name so that we can keep of who is who.) And yes the movie is that boring until the last five minutes. The only thing that kept me going was the decent makeup of the mummy and the over the top facial expressions of the evil professor.

Riffs: Joel's riff delivery in this one is way too laid back and Crow barely speaks. I know a lot of people have issues with the original person who did Tom Servo (Josh Weinstein). But to be honest, his riffs were the best in this episode (especially during the short). I found myself liking this version of Tom - with a laid back but corrosive delivery (but yes the future version of Tom is of course a riffing God). While there is not a continual stream of riffing, I did find myself chuckling a lot during this episode.

Host Segments: The opening segment with the Mads was bad (this is where the future Mad, TV's Frank, is missed). The rest of the segments are the crew being attacked by Devil Dogs - which is slightly amusing.

Many disparage the early episodes of MST3K (the KTMAs and Season One), but "The Robot vs. The Aztec Mummy" is a great example of how loose and fun the show could be in its early days. Not yet locked too tightly into formula, the show is still finding its legs, but has already learned how to use its new scripted format to maximize the jokes. The movie is a great choice, with plenty of ridiculous visuals and opportunities for riffing. The first "short" (a segment of "Radar Men from the Moon") also breaks new ground.

All in all, a great episode for fans of the show, particularly those who are unfamiliar with the original Tom Servo, Josh "J. Elvis" Weinstein. He shines in both the host and theater segments.

I am a huge fan of MST3K. But even their comments couldn't save this one. The movie is Supposed to be horrible, as per the premise of the show. But this movie provided such an unwatchable background, I felt sorry for Joel, Tom Servo, and Crow. It's like they were choking in a small bubble of bland and couldn't gasp out anything funny. I am an Amazon Prime member and have watched All of the Prime inclusive MST3Ks. This was my first pay purchase for the Satellite Of Love crew. There are 2 saving graces of this mess. The Commander Cody short at the start, and the super laughable wait till the end for the ridiculous 'Robot'. Where is Zaff Rouzdower when you need him? Spend your $2.99 on another Misty.
